How to Prevent Baby Skin Darkening: Simple and Safe Tips

The texture and colour of your newborn’s skin keep changing regularly until he/she is about 3 months old. So, you don’t have to fret too much about skin darkening at this stage. However, even after 3 months, if your baby’s skin continues to darken, you can follow some simple tips at home to manage it. Read on to know more.

How to Prevent Baby’s Skin From Darkening?

Follow these simple ways to protect your baby’s skin from damage and darkening —

• Over-exposure to the sun – A strict no!

Avoid exposing your baby too much to the sun's scorching rays, as it may cause darkening and tanning issues. Exposing your baby to the early morning rays is good, though, as he/she can absorb vitamin D from sunshine.

• Water temperature

Always use lukewarm water for bathing your baby. When you bathe your infant in very hot/cold water, it may lead to the formation of dark patches on his/her skin.

• Coconut oil massage

Gently massage your baby’s body with coconut oil at regular intervals to keep his/her skin healthy and free from darkening.

• Homemade massage cream

Add a few drops of milk and a string of saffron in a bowl. Leave it overnight. In the morning, use this mixture to massage your baby’s body well. Wash him/her after 5 minutes to reduce skin darkening issues.

• Medical help

The colour of skin can keep varying in newborns. Your baby may start showing his/her natural skin colour only by the time he/she is 3 months old. Until then, you must remain patient and follow the above tips. However, if your baby’s skin continues to darken even after this stage, consult your doctor. This could indicate other problems, such as dry skin, increased consumption of iron, cardiac ailments, side effects of certain medications, and jaundice.

Conclusion

When you notice skin darkening in babies, you can stick to the tried and tested tips of coconut oil massage, using lukewarm water for bathing and avoiding exposing your baby to sunlight. In most cases, this issue will go away naturally. However, in some cases, pigmentation and darkening may continue long after your baby has completed 3 or 4 months. Talk to your doctor immediately, as this could indicate certain skin conditions or an existing ailment.

Bringing up a baby can involve considerable medical expenses. Investing in a comprehensive health insurance plan is a great way to manage these expenses properly without compromising your lifestyle.
