6 Common Health Signs to Spot in Your Elderly Parents

Aging is inevitable and so are the common health problems in elderly that come along with it. But it might be a bit tricky to figure out if the physical and psychological changes in your parents are normal or whether they need help. Some parents do not intend to bother their children with their issues and tend to keep their health issues from them. Some find it embarrassing to admit that they need help with their daily activities as they are unable to handle those themselves. If you live afar then a simple phone call might not be enough to gauge their health status.

Trying to understand whether the physical, social and psychological changes you notice in your parents are a cause of concern or just common health problems in elderly. If you see any of these 6 signs in your parents, maybe it's time to provide them with additional support as their health might be at risk.

Unexpected changes in mood or extreme mood swings

We all feel a wide range of emotions and we need those emotions as they help us in communicating with others. It is normal to feel angry or frustrated at times. But if you notice your parents having unexpected changes in mood or extreme mood swings, it can be a sign of health problems. If your parents are behaving out of character and you see the constant occurrence of mood swings then it might be a sign of depression or dementia.

Forgetfulness or confusion while taking medications, performing once-familiar tasks around the home, etc.

It is perfectly fine to forget things from time to time. Modest memory loss is common among aging parents and can be the side effect of the medication. But it can be a cause of concern if they are:

● unable to perform once familiar tasks at home

● forgetting to take medication on time

● taking the wrong medication

● asking the same thing over and over again

● Facing difficulty in remembering or being confused about people, places, or things.

If you have observed any of the above then you must consult with their doctor to ensure they get the right treatment in time.

Broken appliances and other safety issues

On your next visit home if you find broken appliances or notice any safety concerns such as

● Inability to identify and respond to danger

● Forgetting to turn off the gas stove

● Leaving a candle or cigarette burning while sleeping

It is time to look for additional help or discuss the option of assisted living because your parents might be at risk of injury.

Depression, low energy, or loss of interest in activities and hobbies

Ask your parents if they are in touch with their friends, getting around as much as they used to, attending community gatherings, still doing daily activities, and enjoying their hobbies. If they are not doing any of the above-mentioned things and you find them sleeping for most of the day and reluctant to go out to meet friends and family then it can be a sign of depression. It can also indicate that their health is on the decline and they need immediate help.

Poor diet or hygiene and weight loss

The immune system function of the elderly slows down with age due to which they are more susceptible to infections and diseases. A poor diet can lead to weight loss which can be a cause of concern as it further weakens their body's ability to fight off infections. While loss of appetite in elderly is a common occurrence, poor diet or hygiene and weight loss can be a sign of major health issues such as depression, dementia or even cancer. If you notice any of these problems in your parents then it is advisable to discuss it with their doctor.

Problems with balance or unsteady gait

Sometimes simple signs such as change in the way your parents walk can be an indication of a health problem. Inability to balance on their feet or reluctance to move can be a sign of bones, joints or muscle issues. Even neurological issues lead to unsteady gait and need to be consulted with your parents’ doctor.

So next time you visit your parents, keep an eye on all the signs discussed in this article to spot health problems in your parents and schedule an appointment with their doctor.
