9 Ways to Lose Your Weight after Pregnancy

It is not uncommon for new mothers to worry about the weight they gain during pregnancy. Here is everything you need to know about it. Baby weight is the weight you gain during pregnancy. It mainly consists of additional blood, the amniotic fluid, the newly developed breast tissues, the placenta and the stored fat. Post parturition, it is important to work on losing this weight as it can have a negative impact on your health.

Tips to help lose baby weight

Here are some tips that can help you lose your baby weight.

1. Make realistic goals

You cannot lose all your baby weight in no time. The process takes time - usually 6 to 12 months in most women. Hence, you should be realistic with the goals you set for yourself. Be patient, be consistent with your exercise and diet, and you will lose the baby weight over some time.

2. Don't diet

A lot of people think that doing a crash diet might be the right way to lose your baby weight. That is an extremely risky path to take. Post pregnancy and delivery, your body needs a lot of nutrition to recover. This is why you should not embark on some low-energy diet. This is especially not advisable if you’re breastfeeding the infant.

3. Load up on superfoods

Superfood is a term referring to food items that are nutritious. These may be food products rich in protein - such as beans, legumes, lentils, lean cuts of meat and dairy. Coloured fruits such as red fruits and leafy vegetables are also rich in antioxidants, which improves your health and also help you with weight loss. Any time you feel like having a snack, go for healthy options rather than junk foods.

4. Keep hydrated

All kinds of weight loss need to be done while drinking a lot of water. Drinking water at room temperature or cold water can help you burn more calories than usual. Water can help in burning fat, thus playing a huge role in your weight loss. Not only that, water also reduces the calorie you consume through other liquids, most of which contain sugar. Having been proven as an appetizer suppressant, drinking a lot of water can help you maintain a strict diet.

5. Exercise

Consult your doctor to know when you can begin doing light exercises after childbirth. It usually depends on the kind of delivery you had and your post-pregnancy complications. Once you get a green light from your doctor, build a habit of exercising daily. Light aerobic exercises, walking and simple yoga poses can be good, to begin with. You can then move on to running, cycling etc. Exercises with reduced calorie intake can help you effectively lose weight.

6. Get rest

Taking care of a newborn might be hard on your sleep schedule. But even then, make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep so that you can re-energize and recover properly. Lack of rest can negatively affect your health and weight.

7. Seek help

There are various weight loss groups with new mothers. Join one such group to meet people who are struggling through the same problem as you are. This will make your journey easier. It is also advisable to contact a doctor whenever you’re in doubt about something.

8. Eat high fibre food

Always go for high fibre food options. Eat barley, oats and whole-grain wheat instead of other refined options. Peas, beans, avocado, berries, bananas etc. are also some high fibre food that can help you lose weight.

9. Avoid highly processed food

Processed carb and sugar is something that you should absolutely stay away from. They cannot stop your weight loss process, but also make you gain more weight.

Conclusion

Postpartum care can require you to make multiple visits to a doctor. This can be quite hefty in your pocket. Having health insurance can help you not worry about your medical costs. Health insurance plans from HDFC ERGO can cover all your medical and pharmacy bills.
