What is World Cancer Day?

World Cancer Day is an international awareness day that takes place on 4 February, every year. It is a global initiative that aims at raising worldwide awareness and education about cancer, and encourages its prevention, detection, and treatment.

Types of Cancer and their Symptoms

Here are some of the most common types of cancer in India and their symptoms:

1. Lung cancer

This is a leading cause of mortality in India. A daily habit of smoking or long-term exposure to second-hand smoke, asbestos, radon gas, etc., can increase the risk of developing lung cancer. Its common symptoms include:

• A cough that won’t stop or worsens over time

• Pain in the chest

• Headache

• Unintended weight loss

• Shortness of breath

• Feeling tired all the time

• Coughing out blood in small amounts.

2. Cervical cancer

It is one of the most common cancers affecting females in India. Symptoms don’t usually develop during initial phase, but at an advanced stage you may experience below symptoms:

• Pain during intercourse

• Pelvic pain

• Vaginal bleeding after sex or menopause

• Heavy discharge of blood from the vagina, accompanied by a foul odour.

3. Breast cancer

This is one of the leading causes of mortality in women around the globe. The common signs and symptoms may include:

• A change in the shape, size, or overall appearance of a breast

• The emergence of a new lump in the breast or near the armpit

• Flaky skin or redness in the breast or around the nipple region

• Pain around the breast area.

4. Oral cancer

This is another common type affecting individuals in India. Common symptoms include:

• Loose teeth

• A mouth or lip sore that doesn’t heal and is prone to bleeding

• Pain or numbness in the ear, mouth, neck, etc.

• A growing lump within your mouth

• Problems in speaking, swallowing, or moving the jaw

5. Gastric cancer

The signs and symptoms may include:

• Stomach pain

• Difficulty in swallowing

• Nausea

• Constant feeling of tiredness

• Black stool

• Indigestion

• Vomiting

• Feeling bloated after meals.
