Trichomoniasis Infection: Causes & Symptoms

Trichomoniasis, also called trich is a common and curable sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the Trichomonas vaginalis parasite. The condition often causes a range of symptoms in both men and women, most of which are usually mild and manageable. Although an STI, trichomoniasis is curable, and its complications are rare. Causes

This condition happens when parasite Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) passes from one person to another during sexual intercourse. Following are the primary causes and risk factors of the condition:

• Having vaginal/oral/anal sex with an infected person without protection

Although trich particularly infects the lower genital tract, it can also infect your hands, anus and mouth.

Symptoms

Trichomoniasis can cause a range of symptoms in men and women. Even if you don’t notice the symptoms, you can still spread this infection. Some common symptoms include:

In men

• Pain during urination

• Burning after ejaculation

• Itching or irritation in the penis

• Unusual discharge from the penis

In women

• Yellow, grey, white or greenish discharge from the vagina

• Burning or irritation in the genitals

• Painful urination

• Pain during sex

Trichomoniasis can cause certain complications in pregnant women. A pregnant woman with trich may deliver prematurely, and the child may have a low birth weight.

Also, if left untreated, trich can make it easier for you to get infected with HIV. It can also increase the risk of prostate or cervical cancer.
