1. You’d know if you had high cholesterol

Many people believe that cholesterol shows visible symptoms. However, that is not true. Most often, cholesterol can go undetected unless you specifically check for your cholesterol levels. So, make sure that you get your cholesterol levels checked so that you can identify when they are high. Early intervention is always much better than going through treatments and procedures.

2. All types of cholesterol are bad

Cholesterol, in general, is considered to be bad and harmful. However, that is not the case. There are 2 main types of cholesterol namely LDL and HDL. LDL is most often known as bad cholesterol and it contributes to most of the cholesterol content in your body. HDL is considered to be good cholesterol and this carries cholesterol in your body to the back of the liver. Then, the liver flushes out this cholesterol. In addition, if you have a good or high amount of HDL, it can help reduce the risk of stroke or heart disease.

3. Everyone should aim for the same cholesterol targets

This is absolutely not true. Different individuals have different physiological and bodily responses. For instance, due to the difference in metabolic rate between individuals, some people may gain weight whereas others may not while consuming junk or a calorie surplus. So, the calorie requirement for different individuals varies. So, the cholesterol targets can be different for different people.

4. Women don’t have to worry about high cholesterol

It is a common myth that only men are most often affected by high cholesterol levels. However, even women are prone to high cholesterol levels. In addition, fat deposition can be experienced more by women when compared to men. So, in addition to staying active, women should also consider following a healthy dietary pattern that is not overloaded with cholesterol.

5. Cholesterol levels are all the result of exercise and diet

Many tend to believe that cholesterol levels in the body are only dependent on their current lifestyle including their patterns of exercise and diet. This may be true for some individuals. But, high cholesterol levels can be genetic too. This genetic cholesterol is caused due to a defect in one of the chromosomes.

6. I take medication for high cholesterol, so I don’t need to worry about diet

Despite taking medication, it is crucial to follow a healthy diet and stay active. Most importantly, following a healthy diet that includes food groups with less amount of cholesterol is key to reducing high cholesterol. If you pay no attention to your diet, then, taking medication for cholesterol control would not be useful.

7. Dietary cholesterol is the most important part of my diet

It is important to know that dietary cholesterol can be derived from food sources such as eggs, meat, and dairy. However, if you keep consuming dietary cholesterol, your liver will produce less cholesterol. Ultimately, dietary cholesterol does not really have a great impact on total cholesterol levels.

8. I don’t need to get my cholesterol checked if I’m under 40 and in good shape

Cholesterol does not depend on age. Many individuals who are in their young adulthood may also experience high cholesterol levels. So, even if you are in good shape and are young, it can still be beneficial to periodically get your cholesterol levels checked.

9. I can’t do anything to change my cholesterol levels

You can definitely change your cholesterol levels with a good diet and exercise. While genetic makeup also plays a key role with respect to your cholesterol levels, genetics cannot be altered. However, you can change your levels with diet, exercise, and medication.

10. Kids Cannot Have High Level of Cholesterol

It is possible for kids to have high levels of cholesterol. This can lead to heart problems in specific when they grow up. So, it is not wise to rule out the chances of high cholesterol in kids. It is important to stay cognizant and have them checked.
