Experiencing Breast Pain? Here are 10 Possible Reasons Why

Experiencing breast pain can make your mind uneasy, given how quickly we tend to jump to serious conclusions these days. However, breast pain doesn’t always have to be worrying. It affects approximately two thirds of women during their reproductive years, and it is one of the most common complaints of those aged 15–40 years. There are various reasons why you might be experiencing breast pain. So, it is important to be informed and aware of your health situation so that you can take the necessary steps. Here are 10 reasons why you might be experiencing breast pain.

1. Ill-fitted Bra:

Before running a hundred permutations and combinations in your mind about the problems with your breasts, ask yourself this simple question - Is your bra comfortable? Choosing the right bra is extremely important for your breast health. If you are wearing wired uncomfortable bra, then during strenuous activities like exercising etc. your breasts may start paining. During periods, sometimes, your breasts might become extra sensitive, and if you are wearing a tight bra, it can cause pain.

2. Cyclic Breast Pain:

Cyclic breast pain is what you feel when your periods are approaching. This is a result of hormonal fluctuations which is also accompanied by premenstrual syndrome. A few days before your periods are about to start, fluctuation of hormones - oestrogen and progesterone - can cause both breasts to swell and become tender, painful or even lumpy. This type of breast sensitivity and pain usually subsides as your periods end.

3. A Sign of Pregnancy:

Early pregnancy symptoms usually mimic pre-menstrual symptoms. In early pregnancy, the body goes through a lot of hormonal changes which may cause your breasts to become swollen and tender. If you experience other early pregnancy symptoms such as nausea, fatigue, missed periods etc. then take a test to confirm the pregnancy. Breast pain and tenderness usually subside by the time you reach the second trimester in your pregnancy.

4. Fibrocystic Breast Changes:

Fibrocystic breast disease is a type of non-cancerous breast condition that can potentially cause uncomfortable symptoms. Your breasts may feel thicker or firmer or you may notice sensitive nipples or itchiness on your breasts. In order to relieve yourself of fibrocystic pain, you can take over the counter medication, apply cool or warm compress and avoid the intake of salt and caffeine. While fibrocystic breast changes are common, consult a doctor immediately if you notice a new potentially malicious lump.

5. Breast Cancer:

Do not jump to this conclusion at the very first sign of breast pain. However, you need to monitor the symptoms and possibilities. It might help you to know that breast pain is rarely a symptom of breast cancer as most breast cancers do not cause any pain. However, inflammation due to cancer can cause pain and discomfort. If you notice any painful lump on your breast that does not subside in a couple of days, contact your doctor immediately in order to rule out breast cancer.

6. Breast Cancer:

Mastitis is a condition that develops as a result of clogged milk ducts. This is a painful breast condition that mostly affects breastfeeding women. An infection of the breast tissue can lead to mastitis. Symptoms such as swollen breasts, redness, breast tenderness, fever and fatigue can point towards mastitis. If you are a breastfeeding mother, feed your baby often and pump milk in between feedings too.

7. Breast Cysts:

Breast cysts are very common. The filling up of fluids in the lobules or ducts can result in cyst formation.Cysts can develop closer to the surface or much deeper as well. This is also a hereditary condition, so if women in your family have dealt with breast cysts, you might be at risk as well. Breast cysts are usually benign, but some cysts can also develop into cancer.

8. Your Medication:

Some medications might trigger breast pain. If you are taking blood pressure medications, oral steroids or antipsychotic medicines then these medications might cause your breasts to feel swollen and uncomfortable. Consult your doctor and request for alternative medicine.

9. Breast Trauma:

If you have experienced some muscular sprain and trauma due to excessive exercising or intensive physical activity then your breasts might pain even if those are not directly hurt. Mostly such pains subside on their own but if the pain persists, consult your doctor for breast pain treatment.

10. Infection:

Sometimes, a common infection like cold or cough can also cause breast pain. Any infection that is causing fatigue and body pain can cause breast pain as well. Once the infection subsides, breast pain will also subside.

Conclusion

Breast health is extremely vital yet often ignored by women. Also, many causes of breast pain can be treated at home, but if the pain persists, you should consider seeing a doctor for breast pain treatment. Your doctor will help you with ways to manage the pain such as regular exercise, medications, and other techniques.
