Understanding the Basics & Importance of Postnatal Care

The first 24 hours after childbirth are very crucial and according to WHO, new mothers should not be discharged from the hospital before this period is completed. Also, once home the initial six to eight weeks of motherhood require special attention. However, in many cases, this is the phase most overlooked in terms of mother care as everyone including the mother is entirely focused on looking after the baby. Understanding the appropriate postnatal care, especially over this period, ensures in making a healthy, happy and safe start to motherhood journey. Here’s what one needs to know:

1. Rest

After childbirth, getting plenty of rest is important as it helps the body to recuperate and also helps in gettingaccustomed tothe new normal. With the need to feed every few hours, getting a long, uninterrupted sleep is severely compromised and hence it is recommended that the mother should take a nap every time the baby is sleeping.

2. Eat nutritious food

Taking care of diet post-delivery is important to maintain health of both, the mother and the new born as what a mother eats affects the growth and development of the baby. So one must ensure to eat a diet rich in all essential nutrients and minerals, and avoid food rich in carbs and fats. Also, keeping yourself hydrated is crucial, so ensure to drink plenty of water and include fresh fruit juices and healthy liquids like coconut water in the diet.

3. Maintain prescribed activity levels

Staying active can keep you mentally and physically fit, so consult your doctor on which exercises can you begin with. Breathing exercises with yoga or pranayama are a great choice too. Apart from this, continue with your daily activities and home chores which does not strain your body too much.

4. Focus on hygiene and health care

Focusing on maintaining a good hygiene plays an important role in postnatal care as it helps to stay away from any complications. Pay special attention to vaginal soreness, bloody discharge, and urination troubles during this phase. While the above symptoms are common post childbirth, if they seem abnormally exaggerated, call your doctor for an immediate advice.

5. Pay attention to mental health

Watch out for signs of postpartum depression or what is commonly called the baby blues. Being moody, irritable and even sad for the first few weeks after childbirth is normal, but if this continues for long along with severe insomnia, anxiety, a sense of pressing sorrow or a fading interest in the baby, talk to your doctor at once.

Always remember that appropriate postnatal carewillensure that the mother is able to resume her normal life quickly and easily.
