Africa has experienced the highest growth in phishing-related cybercrime, targeting small and midsize businesses, per KnowBe4's "2024 Phishing by Industry Benchmarking Report." Analyzing 54 million simulated phishing tests, the report found inadequate user training as a key factor in the region’s vulnerability. Rapid technological growth has compounded the issue, with Africa's phish-prone percentage jumping from 32.8% to 36.7% within a year. Economic challenges, limited resources, and an energy crisis further exacerbate cybersecurity shortcomings. Regulatory compliance is inconsistent, leaving many countries as prime targets for cybercriminals. To combat these issues, experts suggest enhanced regulation, public-private partnerships, and investment in cybersecurity education to bridge the skills gap and improve resilience against increasing cyber threats.
