Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport has announced a major operational shift by banning nighttime flights from 2025. All air traffic between midnight and 6 a.m. will cease to mitigate noise pollution and reduce environmental impacts. This change forms part of Schiphol’s broader sustainability strategy, including transitioning to quieter, cleaner aircraft and capping annual flight numbers.
The move responds to mounting concerns from local communities and environmental advocates over noise disturbances and carbon emissions. With around 10,000 nighttime flights annually, the ban will significantly improve quality of life for nearby residents while promoting greener aviation practices. The airport also aims to halt the use of noisier private jets and curtail short-haul flights where viable train alternatives exist.
While the decision is hailed as a bold step for sustainability, it will require airlines and passengers to adapt significantly, emphasizing the growing demand for environmentally conscious travel solutions.
