Apple has enhanced its AirTag functionality with the “Share Item Location” feature, streamlining lost luggage recovery for travelers. Partnering with 15 global airlines, such as Delta, United, and British Airways, the update allows users to securely share live AirTag location data directly with airlines. The feature, part of iOS 18.2, addresses a long-standing issue where passengers could locate their lost luggage but airlines lacked access to act on it.
This innovation uses secure, time-limited links to provide real-time location updates, expiring after seven days or when deactivated by the owner. Airlines can now integrate these links into their tracking systems, expediting mishandled baggage recovery and enhancing customer experience. Privacy concerns are mitigated with full user control and limited data sharing. With more carriers adopting this technology, Apple’s update promises a more efficient and transparent approach to lost baggage, a major win for frequent travelers.
