China is set to allow visa-free entry for foreign tour groups arriving by cruise ships, starting May 15, in a bid to invigorate its slow inbound travel market. The new policy permits overseas tour groups to stay in China for up to 15 days without a visa, provided they enter through one of 13 designated ports, such as Shanghai, Qingdao, Dalian, and Haikou. Mao Xu, a senior official from the National Immigration Administration, announced the policy, emphasizing its potential to boost the cruise industry and attract more international tourists. Tour groups must be managed by domestic travel agencies and can travel to coastal provinces and Beijing during their stay. Despite efforts to attract tourists, China faces challenges due to a weakening economy and low demand for travel. Australian airline Qantas recently suspended flights to Shanghai, citing insufficient recovery in travel interest between Australia and China post-Covid.
