Greece Implements New Travel Fees to Address Overtourism

In response to overtourism and environmental challenges, Greece has approved new measures affecting travelers. From 2025, the daily tax on short-term rentals during the peak tourist season (April to October) will increase from €1.50 to €8.00, and during winter months, from €0.50 to €2.00. Hotel accommodation taxes will also rise, reaching up to €15 per night in summer, depending on the hotel’s star rating. Furthermore, cruise ship passengers will be charged a €20 levy for arrivals at popular islands such as Santorini and Mykonos, and €5 for other destinations. These measures aim to generate approximately €400 million annually to support infrastructure and environmental initiatives, addressing the impact of natural disasters and the strain of increased tourist numbers on local communities.
