On November 28, 2024, Greenland opened its inaugural international airport in Nuuk, featuring a 2,200-meter runway capable of accommodating large passenger aircraft. This advancement facilitates direct flights from major cities, significantly reducing travel time for visitors. United Airlines plans to commence direct flights from New York/Newark to Nuuk in the summer of 2025, operating twice weekly during peak season. Following Nuuk’s development, additional international airports in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq are slated for completion by 2026, further enhancing regional connectivity. These infrastructural investments, exceeding $700 million, reflect Greenland’s commitment to boosting tourism while ensuring sustainable development. Drawing lessons from Iceland’s rapid tourism growth, Greenlandic authorities are implementing measures to prevent overtourism, including zoning laws and initiatives to ensure that tourism benefits local communities both economically and culturally. These efforts aim to preserve Greenland’s unique environment and heritage amid increasing global interest.
