Maldives Declares War on Smoking, The New Laws Impact Tourists and Locals Alike

In a significant public health initiative, the Maldives will enforce a generational smoking ban starting November 1, 2025, making it illegal for individuals born after January 1, 2007, to purchase tobacco products. This move aims to phase out smoking over time and aligns with global efforts to curb tobacco use. Additionally, the legal age for smoking has been increased from 18 to 21, and the importation of e-cigarettes and vaping devices is now prohibited, a policy that extends to tourists as well. Travelers are advised to leave such items at home to avoid penalties. While specific penalties for violating the new laws have yet to be detailed, the government is amending existing tobacco control regulations to enforce these changes.
