Miami International Airport (MIA) conducted its triennial full-scale emergency preparedness exercise on February 26, 2025, in partnership with the Miami-Dade Fire-Rescue Department and the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office. This Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)-mandated drill, required every three years, aims to assess and enhance the airport’s response to simulated airfield emergencies. The 2025 exercise featured a scenario involving an unruly passenger leading to a shooting incident on an aircraft, testing evacuation protocols, medical response times, and law enforcement coordination. Over 100 student volunteers from Miami Springs Senior High School participated, acting as passengers during the simulation. Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava praised the collaboration, stating, “The triennial drill is just one example of how MIA’s safety and security workforce trains and prepares constantly to keep our visitors and employees safe around the clock.” This initiative underscores MIA’s commitment to maintaining robust safety measures amid its ongoing $9 billion capital improvement program.
