Portugal is set to implement stricter immigration rules, mandating most foreigners to secure a work visa before entering the country. Previously, tourists who found jobs could apply for residence permits. Presidency Minister Antonio Leitao Amaro announced the changes, emphasizing the need for regulated immigration to prevent the exploitation and indignity of migrants. The country saw a 33% increase in foreign residents in 2023, now constituting 10% of the population. The center-right minority government also plans to enhance border controls, establish a task force to clear a backlog of over 400,000 visa applications, and invest in facilities to support migrants living in challenging conditions. These measures aim to better manage the growing number of immigrants and ensure their well-being.
