A new report from the Mastercard Economics Institute reveals a significant rise in Indian air travel, with 97 million passengers passing through Indian airports in the first quarter of 2024. Domestic air passenger traffic surged 21% above 2019 levels, while international travel saw a 4% increase. The “Travel Trends 2024: Breaking Boundaries” report emphasizes that Indian travelers are increasingly exploring destinations like Japan, Vietnam, and the United States despite a stronger US dollar. Popular summer travel spots include Amsterdam, Singapore, and London. The report also notes a growing preference for experiences over material goods among travelers, with a notable increase in spending on nightlife and fine dining. As of March 2024, casual dining spending rose by 49.2%, while fine dining saw a 55.2% increase compared to the previous year. These trends highlight the evolving travel behaviors and economic impact of Indian travelers globally. The Mastercard Economics Institute's findings underscore the dynamic nature of the travel industry in India.
