Thailand Proposes Joint-Visa Program to Boost Tourism

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin of Thailand is championing a joint-visa program with neighboring countries to enhance tourism and economic prospects. The proposed Schengen-type visa seeks to facilitate seamless travel among six Southeast Asian nations, with the potential to boost tourism revenue and diversify Thailand's economy. Despite optimism from industry experts, challenges such as coordinating approvals and standardizing immigration criteria loom. While Srettha aims to elevate Thailand's tourism sector, skepticism exists about the feasibility of the ambitious visa proposal amidst ASEAN's historical challenges in multilateral policy frameworks. Nevertheless, with strategic visa waivers and event-based tourism initiatives, Srettha's government is committed to reaching its target of 80 million tourists by 2027 and positioning Thailand as a prominent destination for global travelers.
