Can Yeast Infection Delay Your Periods?

Yeast infection is a fungal infection on the skin or mucous membranes. The condition commonly affects the vaginal cells and causes excessive itching, irritation and inflammation. Vaginal yeast infection, which is also called Candida vaginal infection, is a common condition among women. Since hormonal fluctuations and changes in the skin's pH are major causes of yeast infections, the chances of getting the condition increase before and during your periods. However, can yeast infection delay periods or affect it in any other way? Let's find out in this article.

Can yeast infection delay your menstrual cycle?

There is no evidence that yeast infection can delay the menstrual cycle. So, in case you have a yeast infection, and your menstrual cycle has been delayed, it is just a coincidence.

In some cases, yeast infections get worse before your menstrual cycle. This is because before periods there is a significant increase in oestrogen level and its high level is one of the risk factors for yeast infections. High oestrogen level lowers the vaginal pH thereby making it more acidic. Yeast grows easily in acidic conditions, and this increases the chances of vaginal yeast infection.

Do yeast infections affect periods?

Yeast infection is unlikely to affect your periods. However, if you are taking antifungal medications for yeast infections, your periods can get delayed by a few days.

Following are some points to keep in mind:

• Yeast infection can worsen during periods due to moist environment and cause a lot of itching and irritation.

• Women go through hormonal changes during periods, which can disturb the vaginal pH level. When the vaginal pH is significantly high, you are more likely to get a yeast infection.

• In some cases, the change in vaginal pH levels makes the vagina less friendly for the yeast to grow. Therefore, it is likely that your period can clear out an existing yeast infection.

• Some women experience four or more yeast infections within one year. This is called symptomatic vulvo-vaginal candidiasis or VVC. The infection may get cleared out during your period but return after a few days. VVC requires proper medical help and long-term treatment.

Conclusion

To sum up, if you have a yeast infection and your periods have been delayed, it can be because of the antifungal medication or other factors, such as stress, polycystic ovarian syndrome, problems with birth control pills, the thyroid gland, etc. Therefore, it is best to consult a doctor who can help you with your menstrual issues, yeast infection and other associated conditions.
