Bronchitis occurs due to inflammation in the lining of the bronchial tubes. A nagging cough followed by mucus is one of the significant symptoms of bronchitis. Depending upon the condition, symptoms of bronchitis can be mild or severe. There are 2 types of major bronchitis – acute & chronic. The former is caused by viral infection and it does not require any treatment as it goes away on its own. In case of the latter, cough is accompanied by mucus for several days, weeks and months. It takes a long time to cure, and sometimes patients might develop COPD (i.e., chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Bronchitis can be caused by a virus, bacteria, through smoking or through pollution. Let’s explore the symptoms of bronchitis in detail.
Common symptoms of Acute & Chronic Bronchitis include:
• Coughing
• Production of mucus (sputum)
• Fatigue
• Shortness of breath
• Slight fever and chills
• Chest discomfort
• Cold-like symptoms, such as a mild headache or body aches
• Symptoms typically improve in about a week, but a lingering cough may persist
• A productive cough lasting at least three months
• Recurring bouts for at least two consecutive years
• Periods when cough or other symptoms worsen
• Acute infections may occur along with chronic bronchitis
• Symptoms could be similar to COVID; hence, getting tested is crucial
If you experience any of the above symptoms, consult your doctor as soon as possible. Sometimes, patients get confused between COVID-19 and bronchitis as the symptoms are similar. Hence, it is necessary to get it tested and seek medical intervention.
