Symptoms of Leukaemia

Leukaemia is cancer of body’s blood forming tissues which produces blood cells. This includes the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. It is characterized by rapid and uncontrolled growth of abnormal blood cells. This growth takes place in your bone marrow where most of body’s blood cells are made. If you have leukaemia, one of the developing blood cells begin to multiply out of control. These abnormal cells are called leukaemia cells and they begin to take over the space inside of your bone marrow. Leukaemia cells are usually immature or still developing white blood cells (WBCs). There are many types of leukaemia and while some are more common in children, the others are more common in adults. Read on to learn about the symptoms of leukaemia in detail.

How to Identify the Symptoms

The symptoms of leukaemia vary depending on the type of leukaemia. For instance, if you have a chronic form of leukaemia, you may not have noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

Some common symptoms of leukaemia include:

• Tiredness

• Anaemia symptoms

• Pale skin

• Weakness

• Breathlessness

• Repeated infections like mouth sores, sore throat, fevers, sweats, coughing, frequent urination with irritation, infected cuts and scratches, and boils

• Increased bruising and bleeding

• Bone pain

• Swollen and tender gums

• Skin rashes

• Headaches

• Vision problems

• Vomiting

• Swollen lymph nodes in the groin, underarm, neck, or stomach

• Enlarged spleen that may cause pain/discomfort

• Chest pain

• Unexplained weight loss

• Recurrent nosebleeds

• Tiny red spots in the skin (petechiae)

• Excessive sweating, especially at night

• Fever or night sweats

• Pain or a feeling of fullness under the ribs on the upper left side due to an enlarged spleen
