In most cases, a thyroid patient can donate blood safely. However, it is still wise to consult your doctor before you opt for blood donation. The doctor may check your blood pressure and other vital signs to ensure safe blood donation. In case any of your vitals are not fine, the doctor may advise you against donating blood. Also, blood donation is a strict no if you are anaemic.

Can you donate blood when on thyroid medications?

Check on this with your doctor as well as the blood bank as certain thyroid medications are not considered safe during blood donation. Therefore, it is best to ask about the same and decide accordingly.

Following are some important points to keep in mind:

• If your thyroid is under investigation or your doctor suspects malignancy, you should not donate blood.

• If you are on thyroid maintenance therapy and are taking prescribed medication, you must not donate blood for at least 3 months or as advised by the doctor.

• If you have an overactive or underactive thyroid, check with your doctor if you can donate blood as these conditions increase the risk of heart disease.

• If you underwent radioactive iodine therapy, you must not donate blood for at least 6 months or as advised by the doctor.
