What are the Symptoms of Tomato Fever?

Tomato fever is a rare form of viral infection that affects mostly children under the age of five. Also known as tomato flu, it was first identified in the Kollam district of Kerala in May 2022. The disease is highly contagious but not fatal. The symptoms are similar to those of chikungunya, but tomato fever is not that serious. Taking precautionary measures is the only way to prevent tomato fever infection, hence parents must teach necessary hygiene and respiratory etiquette to their children. Symptoms of Tomato Fever

The symptoms of tomato fever are similar to Chikungunya. The primary symptoms of tomato fever are rashes and red blisters all over the body. Some other symptoms of tomato fever are as follows:

• High fever

• Body ache

• Joint swelling

• Fatigue

• Dehydration

• Discoloration of hands, feet, knees and buttocks

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Sneezing

• Runny nose

• Stomach cramps

• Coughing

• Diarrhoea

How to Prevent Tomato Flu?

The best way to safeguard your children is to follow preventive procedures. These are:

• Avoiding proximity of children with those already infected

• Hygiene and respiratory etiquette like cleaning hands regularly, covering mouth while coughing, etc.

• Staying hydrated by drinking lots of fluids like water, milk, fresh juices, coconut water and more

• Eating immunity-boosting foods

• Increasing awareness among children about the flu and its effects

• Teaching children not to suck their thumbs, pick their noses and share their toys and food with other infected kids

• Giving a warm bath to young children to kill the germs (if any) on their bodies

Children below the age of five years are more susceptible to this disease. Therefore, always maintain good hygiene for young children as they are more prone to getting sick. If you notice any symptoms of tomato fever, immediately schedule an appointment with the doctor. If your child is diagnosed with tomato fever, then quarantine the child from other kids. Make sure your child does not scratch the blisters, as it would lead to the infection spreading further. Keep your child hydrated by encouraging him/her to drink plenty of water.
