Your baby goes through various developmental milestones during different phases of his life. One such important phase is the terrible twos. Though it is named this way, your kid doesn’t necessarily need to be two years old to enter this phase. Your kid may go through the terrible twos stage anytime until he turns three. During this time, his emotional outbursts, frustrations and temper tantrums are at their peak. However, with proper management, patience and love, you can successfully help your kid get through this phase. Read on to learn few tips on handling your kid’s aggressive terrible twos behaviour.
Contrary to popular opinion, the terrible 2s stage doesn’t start only when your kid turns two years old. You can expect your kid to show the tantrums expected in this phase as soon as he completes one year. Usually, these tantrums last in kids until they are a little over three years old.
Ø Says “No” to almost everything you say.
Ø Understands his independence and wants to take full advantage of it.
Ø Doesn’t give in easily, despite your attempts.
Ø Never put a stop to his independence.
Ø Encourage him to make decisions on his own, as it helps him become a capable and independent individual.
Ø Divert him when he is extremely irritated and fussy.
Ø In case of violent or aggressive behaviour, be polite and explain to him the consequences of his actions.
Ø Temper tantrums and frequent mood swings.
Ø Irritant behaviour most of the time.
Ø Tries to communicate his irritation to you through verbal and non-verbal communication.
Ø Understand the root cause of temper tantrums (thirst, hunger, sleepy feeling, sickness, etc.) and correct it immediately.
Ø Never yell at him. Instead, assure him politely that his demands are heard and that you love him. You can then politely make him listen to you.
Ø Hug him to help him deal with his temper tantrums properly.
Ø Wants to do everything on his own, including cleaning his room, folding his clothes, talking on the phone, etc.
Ø Wants to prove to you he is big enough to do all the chores
Ø Make them understand the difference between safe and unsafe chores without curbing their independence.
Ø Involve them in simple tasks to give them the satisfaction of helping you with household chores.
Ø Be patient with them while they complete the tasks given.
Every kid behaves differently in the “terrible twos” stage. As a parent, you will not have any template to handle the challenges in this phase. Be patient, and assure your kids of all your love and time to help them get through this phase effectively.
