Why Are Fried Foods Bad For You?

Effects of Fried Food on Your Health

Eating a lot of fried food can negatively affect your health. This is because:

1. Fried foods are high in trans-fats

Trans-fats form when unsaturated fats undergo a process called hydrogenation. This process changes the chemical structure of fats, making them difficult for your body to break down, which can ultimately lead to negative health effects. Trans-fats are associated with an increased risk of many health conditions, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity.

Trans Fats are found in many packaged food items, such as ready-to-fry burger patties, frozen french fries, etc to help them have a longer shelf life. When you deep fry these items, the trans fats are released. Trans fats are added to these foods to help them have a longer shelf life. Trans fats are also formed when refined cooking oil gets heated to high temperatures.

2. Fried Foods are High in calories

Compared to other cooking methods, deep frying adds a lot of calories. When foods are fried in oil, they lose water and absorb fat, which further increases their calorie content. The reason of why are fried foods unhealthy is because they are significantly higher in fat and calories than their non-fried counterparts.

For instance, a medium-sized potato, when baked, has only about 93 calories and 0.13 grams of fat. When the same potato is sliced up and deep-fried, you get a whopping 312 calories and 15 grams of fat from it.

3. Increases your risk of disease

Eating more fried foods is associated with a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. This is because:

• It causes heart health problems

Eating fried foods causes obesity which is a direct cause of cardiac problems. Fried foods also lead to a drop in HDL or good cholesterol levels resulting in increase of LDL cholesterol levels which further increases the risk of heart ailments. And finally, consuming too many fried food items can push up your blood pressure and give you chronic hypertension, which can lead to a heart attack someday. This is why fried foods are so bad for the health and wellness of your heart.

• It causes Diabetes

Diabetes has directly been linked to diabetes and this is another reason why fried food is bad. Several studies have shown that people who consume fried foods regularly and over a period of time, are very likely to develop type 2 diabetes at some point.

Fried foods are usually coated in a batter which is full of carbs. This contributes to a huge amount of sugar consumption, as carbs are nothing but sugars. Then, a protein called Bcl10 is released when food is deep-fried. An extra amount of Bcl10 in the body can lead to insulin resistance and this can further increase the chances of type 2 diabetes. And finally, due to the high-calorie content, fried foods have the potential to make you obese. Obesity is also a major cause of diabetes.

• It causes Cancer

Deep frying a food item leads to the release of a substance called acrylamide, which is highly toxic in nature. Acrylamide is formed due to a reaction between the amino acids and sugars found in a food item that happens when exposed to very high temperatures. When you consume too much acrylamide, there is a higher risk of getting certain types of cancer such as ovarian cancer, kidney cancer and endometrial cancer. This is why fried food is considered to be so harmful to health and you should monitor how much of it you are consuming.

This is why you should consider switching to a different type of cooking such as baking, broiling, roasting, grilling or air frying. All these methods are quite common these days and you can get many kitchen appliances to make food with.
