Why Sunscreen is Important?

We all have heard that it is important to wear sunscreen for skin protection but many think it is only needed when they are going to the beach or are going to be exposed to sun for long time. But in reality, it is important to wear sunscreen daily or you may be putting your skin at risk. This is because UV rays are always present, and they are the cause of sun damage and skin cancer. Take a look at this article to know the importance of sunscreen for your skin health.

Why should you wear Sunscreen?

Sunscreen is crucial for skin health for various reasons:

1. Protection against UV rays:

UV radiation can cause skin damage, including sunburn, premature ageing, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Applying sunscreen shields the skin from harmful UV rays emitted by the sun.

2. Reduces risk of Skin Cancer:

Prolonged exposure to UV radiation increases the risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma which is a form of skin cancer. Regular use of sunscreen can significantly reduce this risk.

3. Prevents Premature Ageing:

UV rays accelerate skin ageing by causing wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and skin sagging. Application of sunscreen protects the skin from UV rays and helps maintain a youthful appearance along with preventing premature ageing.

4. Prevents Sunburn:

Applying sunscreen helps prevent sunburn by blocking UVB rays, which are responsible for causing sunburn and skin reddening.

5. Helps maintain Even Skin Tone:

Use of sunscreen helps prevent development of uneven skin tone, including hyper-pigmentation & hypo-pigmentation which are cause due to sun exposure.

6. Preserves Skin Health:

Sunscreen protects the skin’s integrity and health by preventing damage to the skin’s DNA and supporting its natural barrier function.

How to Use Sunscreen?

1. Select a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or above. Look for a sunscreen that offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

2. Apply generously and make sure you cover all exposed skin areas, including your face, neck, ears, and arms. Pay attention to commonly overlooked areas such as back of the neck, top of the feet, and scalp.

3. Apply sunscreen at least 15 minutes before going outside to allow it to be fully absorbed into the skin.

4. Reapply every 2 hours or more frequently if you’re swimming or sweating heavily.

5. Make sunscreen part of your daily routine, even on cloudy days.

How Often to use Sunscreen?

Sunscreen should be applied everyday irrespective of the weather outside. It should be applied liberally and every 2 hours, or more frequently if you’re swimming, sweating heavily, or towel drying.

Most adults need about 1 ounce to fully cover their body.

Conclusion

Overall, sunscreen is essential for maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin and reducing the risk of sun damage and associated health problems.
