What is RTO?

Pune is one of the busiest city in Maharashtra, with a lot of vehicle movement. The RTO Pune, established under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, section 213, ensures that city traffic is controlled. Apart from this, the primary responsibility of Pune RTO is to enforce the Motor Vehicle Act’s rules, regulations and provisions. The Pune RTO also collects road taxes, issue permits, road safety measures and undertake measures to control pollution. The Transport commissioner of the state of Maharashtra heads RTO Pune. RTOs in Pune abide by the regulations laid down in the Maharashtra state vehicles regulations, 1989.

How To Register Vehicles At RTO Pune?

    There are two types of registration done. However it is important to note that permanent registration is necessary to run the vehicle on road as per Motor Vehicles Act of 1988.

    Temperory Registration : Temporary registration refers to the registration number offered by the vehicle dealer, valid only for seven days. It is done for the buyer's convenience to legally drive the vehicle for seven days, after which a permanent registration is mandatory.

    Permanent Registration: Permanent registration is the actual registration of the vehicle and happens seven days after a vehicle is purchased from any showroom. Permanent registration happens only at RTO and applies only to new vehicles, not second-hand purchases. However, a permanent registration is valid only for fifteen years, after which it has to be renewed

    Under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, it is mandatory for every vehicle to have a Registration Card. Pune RTO is responsible for the RC of every vehicle in Pune city. They have been decentralized to ensure that the vehicle registration steps are quick and hassle-free.

    • You can either fill out the online application form at www.parivahan.gov.in or visit your nearest Pune RTO to register your vehicle.

    • You can also send an SMS to get the registration details in the below-mentioned format: VAHAN to 77382 99899.

    • You need to submit all the documents mentioned above.

    • The inspecting authority at RTO will inspect the vehicle and take an imprint of the chassis number.

    • Then, you have to pay the registration fee at the counter of the Pune RTO so that the authorities can put your vehicle's data into the central database managed by the GOI.

    • Once the RTO Supredietent verifies the vehicle data, the Assistant Regional Transport Office will approve.

    • You can check your vehicle's registration status through the VAHAN web portal.

    • • Also, you can download the RC from the same website after seven days.


Steps To Get Fancy Registration Numbers

• Some people believe that specific numbers are lucky for them and want to keep them as their registration numbers

• If you want fancy numbers for your vehicle, then you have to visit the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway

• After signing up in the portal, you must select your desired fancy number.

• Then, pay the fees required for the registration and book the number.

How To Renew Vehicle Registration At Pune RTO

After the completion of 15 years of any Registration Certificate(RC), it expires, and the vehicle owner has to compulsory renew it. Then, after every five years, the RC needs to be renewed. You can fill out an online application form and attach the documents below to renew the vehicle Registration Certificate at Pune RTO

List of documents required for Vehicle Registration at RTO Pune

    Irrespective of what vehicle you've purchased, it is compulsory to register it at the nearest RTO to register the vehicle with the Indian Government officially. Here is a list of documents you must keep handy before applying for RC. Also, note that before arranging other documents for registration, buying a motor insurance policy for your vehicle is necessary.

    • As per the Supreme Court's order, it is now mandatory for people buying a car to purchase a third party car insurance with a three-year policy tenure. On the other hand, a 5-year third party bike insurance policy is compulsory for new two-wheeler registration. However, suppose a bike owner opts for a comprehensive two wheeler insurance policy, we offer package cover with one year of own damage and five years of third party cover. If a person opts for a comprehensive car insurance policy for a private car, we offer a bundled policy of one year of own damage and three years of third-party cover.

    • Date of birth proof of the vehicle owner

    • Address proof of the vehicle owner

    • Passport-size photographs of the vehicle owner

    • Custom bill in case of imported vehicle

    • STA approval in case of trailers

    • Manufacturer certificate, in case of carriage

    • Tax payment receipt if the vehicle has been purchased from another state

Functions Of Pune RTO

RTO Pune’s primary function is to ensure that the public strictly follows the laws and regulations prescribed under the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988. In addition, RTO Pune has the significant function of enforcing the Motor Vehicles Act and Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Rules. RTOs are significant in the city's smooth transportation and other traffic-related services. It ensures that every vehicle plying on the roads of Pune is registered with it and every driver driving the vehicle has obtained a valid driving licence. RTO Pune also provides other functions, which are listed as follows:

Issuing Driving License
Pune RTO is responsible for issuing learners' and driving licenses. After carrying out learning and driving tests, the license is provided to the vehicle owner if they pass those tests. The Pune RTO is also responsible for renewing driver's licenses, issuing duplicate driving licenses, etc.

Issuing Registration Certificates
of Vehicles
Vehicle registration is an essential function of the Pune RTO. The Pune RTO provides Registration Certificates, renews the RC, updates any required information on the RC, issues duplicate RC, provides fitness certificates to a transport vehicle, transfers vehicle ownership, and maintains a central database of all the vehicles in the city.

Collecting Road Taxes
Some taxes are imposed on motor vehicles, like the one-time Road tax, also called the MV or Motor Vehicle Tax. Pune RTO is responsible for collecting all these taxes from the vehicles in Pune City. In addition, Pune RTO also collects International Multi-purpose Vehicle fees, popularly known as the IMV fees.

Educating The Road Safety measures
Every year, there are several road accidents in India, most of which are due to not following road safety measures. The Pune RTO is responsible for educating and creating awareness among all the drivers of Pune about road safety measures and ways to drive safely and get into any accident.

Checking Motor Insurance Validity
A significant function of the Pune RTO is to inspect vehicles at the check post to see whether drivers have valid motor insurance policy or not. Another function of the Pune RTO is to check if the drivers are following the rule laid out by the Motor Vehicle Act.

Providing permits
If you want to travel from Pune to another state and vice versa, you would have to take a permit from the respective RTOs. RTO Pune issues various other permits such as stage carrier permits, special permits, permits for professional driving instructions, school buses, commercial vehicles, tour vehicles, etc.

Maintenance of Database of Vehicles
Pune RTO maintains the registered vehicles' database, along with the owner's details. It also maintains all the details of the transfer of registration to other states and the renewal of certificates and licenses.

Collection of Road Tax
Pune RTO is responsible for collecting road tax, a significant revenue source for the government to maintain the necessary infrastructure for the public. It also collects certain fees, such as Inspector Motor Vehicle, for conducting any department's action cases.

Conducting Scrutiny of Vehicle at the Check-points
RTO conducts scrutiny of vehicles at necessary checkpoints to ensure compliance with the safety norms on roads. RTO checks the validity of the PUC (Pollution under Control) certificate, valid driving license and valid insurance certificates. It also inspects accidental vehicles to ensure they can apply on the road again. .

RTO Pune collects specified fees to perform various services such as issuing the driving licence, vehicle registration, issues of permits, etc. The charges for various services differ for different kinds of vehicles. Take a look at the RTO Pune fees structure:

Frequently Asked Questions on Pune RTO

Usually, the Pune RTO provides the RC after seven days of registration. However, if you want to track the status of your RC, you visit the official website.
After filling up the form, paying the registration fees, and submitting all the required documents, the Pune RTO ideally takes a week to verify everything. However, sometimes, the Pune RTO takes 2-3 days longer to process all the documents. After everything is verified, RTO registration gets successful.
There are five RTO offices in Pune.
You can certainly register a car in Pune RTO after buying it in Mumbai. But, to register the car in Pune RTO, you need to produce a NOC (No Objection Certificate) at the Pune RTO.
If you lose your license, immediately file an FIR and keep the copy with you. Also, make sure to file an affidavit on stamp paper. Then, visit the Pune RTO, along with the copy of the FIR, filed affidavit, and three passport-sized photographs. Fill out the duplicate license application and submit it with the other documents. Then, your biometrics will be tested, and after successful verification, the Pune RTO will issue you a duplicate license.
