All about RTO's New Vehicle Registration Process

We all know that it is mandatory to get your vehicle registered at the Regional Transport Office (RTO) to ply on Indian roads. Registration gives a unique identity to your car or bike and differentiates it from other vehicles. RTO regulates all motor vehicles of the country. Therefore, when you plan to buy a new vehicle, you must also look at the RTO registration process for private or commercial vehicles. What is RTO Vehicle Registration?
To give a unique identity to your vehicle, you need to get the registration done through RTO. The vehicle gets allotted the registration number after the RTO officials inspect and verify it. This number is permanent, and it remains unchanged even if the vehicle is sold later to another person. The vehicle registration process is different for a commercial and private vehicle. You can even get the vehicle registration done by yourself through the local RTO instead of getting it done by the dealer.
Before you get a permanent registration number for your new vehicle, the dealer will provide you with a temporary number that is valid for one month. After that, the new vehicle needs to be registered at the local RTO to get a permanent number for your vehicle within this validity period. The vehicle registration fee for two-wheelers is Rs 300, while for four-wheelers private vehicles, it is Rs 600, and for transport light motor vehicles, it is Rs 1000.

Steps to Apply For New Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC) at RTO
Irrespective of whether you have purchased a new or used car/bike, it is compulsory to get a registration certificate (RC) for that vehicle. RC is the official document which states that the vehicle is registered with the Indian Government. This document also mentions the territorial boundary in which the vehicle can be used and other important details of the vehicle that entitles them to use Indian road. RC is valid for 15 years from the date of its issuance. It can be renewed for five years after its expiry. As per the Motor Vehicle Act, all vehicle owners must have a valid RC. Be sure to get the correct details entered in the RC of your vehicle, like your name, vehicle details, date of purchase, etc.
Now, let’s look at the step to get a Vehicle Registration Certificate :
Take your new vehicle to the nearest RTO office.
The inspecting authority at RTO inspects the vehicle.
Form 20 has to be filled for the RC and all necessary documents, including a copy of the PAN card, form 21, form 22, certificate of new car insurance or new bike insurance, and address proof. Bill of Entry will be needed for a vehicle that has been imported.
The authority will take an imprint of the chasis number.
Once you pay the required registration fee and tax at the cash counter of the RTO office, the vehicle data will be entered into the central database.
RTO superintendent will verify the vehicle data, followed by the approval from Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO).
How to do Check Vehicle Registration Status Online
Your new vehicle registration status can be checked through VAHAN web portal. You can also get the registration certificate online through this portal. In case you lose your RC, you can even apply for duplicate RC through this portal.
How to Get a VIP/Fancy Registration Number
People usually take a VIP or fancy registration number to show that their vehicle is special and unique. To get the VIP number, you have to register on the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highway. After you sign up at that portal, select the fancy number. Then, pay the required fees for registration and reserve the number. The fees for reserving fancy numbers differ between states.
