In a latest report released by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and published in Lancet, it was noted that there has been a surge in cancer case in women more than men in the past decade and studies have predicted that the trend will keep rising in the next two decades. The researchers noted in the study that 3 out of every 5 individual in India succumb to death following a cancer diagnosis.
This ratio was derived as per the GLOBOCON online database that provides estimates of incidences, mortality and prevalence of 36 types of cancer including non-melanoma skin cancer for 185 countries or territories worldwide.
Referring to the GLOBOCON data the ICMR showed that India ranks the third highest in cancer incidence globally, after US and China and second in mortality after China. The data also showed that even though women are most affect by breast cancer, lung cancer causes the most deaths in both genders. The analysis of the data also reflected that in India, childhood and reproductive age group individuals are at the lowest risk of developing and dying from cancer as compared to middle-aged and geriatric age groups.
The study also predicted that the mortality rates are expected to rise from 64.7 to 109.6 between 2022 and 2050. Between 2012 and 2022, cancer incidence increased by 36% rising from 1.01 million in 2012 to 1.38 million in 2022. Similarly cancer related deaths also exhibited a rise of 30.3%, increasing from 0.68 million in 2012 to 0.89 millions in 2022.
The authors of the study concluded that there is an immediate need of creating awareness, focused interventions and strategies to address this burdensome problem.
