The Ayushman Bharat-PM Jan Arogya Yojna (AB-PMJAY) is the largest health assurance scheme initiated by the Government of India to provide health cover of Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalisation to over 12 crores families that form the bottom 40% of India’s population. According to the data obtained by the National Health Authority (NHA), since the inception of AB-PMJAY in 2018, 6.5 crore hospitalisations with treatment costs of Rs 81, 979 crores, took place. According to the National Health Authority, 3.2 crore hospitalisation amounting to Rs 39, 349 involved women, helping them get access to healthcare.
According to official sources, this scheme has been utilised by women more than men. The 10 states and Uts where there has been maximum utilisation by women are Meghalaya (65%), Arunachal Pradesh (57%), Chhattisgarh (56%), Mizoram (54%), Nagaland (53%), Jharkhand (51%), Tripura (51%), J&K (50%). The top specialities under PMJAY utilised by women were – Cancer, ophthalmology, ENT care and neonatal packages. Officials believe that women could reap the benefits of this scheme as individual cards and enrollements happened ensuring healthcare facilities were extended to one and all.
