A 38-year-old man was found positive for Mpox infection in Kerela on 18th September 2024. Currently, he’s being treated in Northern Kerala’s Malappuram district and the case has been confirmed by the State Health Department.
It is learned that the infected person came back to Kerala recently from UAE and had been admitted to the hospital with symptoms of Mpox. Veena George, the State Health Minister confirmed the same through her Facebook account. The Minister also urged people travelling from abroad to be vigilant of the symptoms, inform the authorities, and seek treatment as soon as possible to limit the spread. The man who is now being treated at Manjeri Medical College recognised his symptoms and took precautionary measures as quickly as possible to prevent transmission. He isolated himself from his friends and family and got himself hospitalised asap. These samples were then sent for testing, later confirming the Mpox infection.
The early symptoms of Mpox usually manifest as rashes, fever and swelling in lymph nodes. As the infection progresses it could lead to other medical complications. However, the silver lining is that Mpox is self-limiting and lasts between two to four weeks where patients have been reported to recover with supportive medical care and management. It is usually transmitted through close contact with an infected person.
