Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) two-wheelers might emerge as a good alternative to traditional petrol two-wheelers. It will indeed have less operational cost compared to petrol two-wheelers. However, it will also come with disadvantages. The main problem of CNG two-wheelers will be the lack of power.
In 2016, the government launched a pilot programme in New Delhi for CNG two-wheelers. As part of this pilot project, some food delivery services were using CNG-powered Honda Activa models, a move which, despite its potential benefits, faced several challenges that led to its failure.
The main issue with CNG-powered Honda Activa was the lack of power. There was a noticeable delay in response, especially during cold starts, and the vehicle struggled for power in CNG mode. However, regarding environmental benefits, CNG two-wheelers emit 50% less CO2, 75% less carbon monoxide and almost zero non-methane hydrocarbons compared to petrol two-wheelers.
