Domestic Sales of Two-Wheeler Dip in May, Exports Rise

There is a decline in domestic two-wheeler sale in May due to weak wedding season compared to last May. Among the major players, only TVS Motor company posted a 7% rise in domestic two-wheeler sales. Most companies though reported substantial gains in their export markets.

Weddings typically typically boost two-wheeler buying in India. Despite a tepid wedding season, sector tracker HSBC Global Research said its discussion with channel partners suggested that good demand was likely in the upcoming festival season. Hero MotoCorp sold 4,98,123 units this May compared to 5,19,474 units in the same period last year, a decline of 4.1%. While Bajaj and Eicher Motors report a decline of 3% and 8%, respectively. However, Bajaj and Hero MotoCorp achieved growth in exports by 4% and 67.24%, respectively. Eicher Motors achieved 33% growth in exports mainly due to the increasing demand for Royal Enfield motorcycles in the international market. The export growth has been fuelled by overall positive demand from the global markets.
