Personal Accident Cover – Protection at Fingertips

Personal Accident cover for Two Wheeler Insurance

If you own a new bike, you must be familiar with mandatory third party bike insurance. However, the mandatory personal accident (PA) policy is another essential component for own riders. Earlier, personal accident cover was part of a bike insurance policy. But after January 2019, a new provision allows bike owners to skip this cover if they already possess a personal accident cover or own another vehicle with a personal accident cover.

What is Personal Accident Insurance?

A personal accident insurance policy covers an individual against injuries, death, or disabilities resulting from accidents. Given the numerous potential risks associated with riding, whether from unfortunate circumstances or the errors of others, personal accident cover proves invaluable. In unforeseen road accidents, a personal accident cover steps in to provide compensation for both the insured individual and their loved ones. This coverage is especially beneficial for individuals whose work requires substantial travel, ensuring comprehensive protection for both work and leisure.

Who Can be Eligible to Opt Personal Accident Cover

Opt for personal accident cover

The obligatory accidental insurance policy applies to all bike owners, constituting a legal requirement. If you own a bike, this coverage is a must to adhere to statutory regulations. Alternatively, obtaining an accidental insurance policy within bike insurance is permissible for individuals aged 18 or above. The upper age limit for policy coverage is 70 years.

Benefits of Personal Accident Cover

Bike riders are subject to a lot of unpredictable situations on the roads. Slippery road conditions, animals on the road, potholes, a four-wheeler turning suddenly without an indicator, someone trying to brake to prevent an accident ahead of them, etc. A lot of these incidents can be out of the sphere of control of a bike rider. A personal accident policy offers protection against such occurrences. The following are some benefits of PA cover in bike insurance.

1. Financial assistance to the bike owner if they meet with a disability due to an accident.

2. Financial assistance to the bike owner to cover medical expenses like hospital bills, treatment, and medicines.

3. Financial assistance to the surviving members of the family if the bike owner loses his/her life due to an accident.

Types of Personal Accident Cover

The best accidental insurance plan is available in the following categories.

1. Personal accident insurance cover

The plan protects the owner-rider against consequences such as loss of sight, loss of limbs, and death of the insured. You can opt for the cover with a bike insurance policy.

2. Group personal accident insurance policy

A group personal accident insurance policy is usually sponsored by employers for their employees. And the plans are basic and are available at affordable rates, based on the strength of employees.

3. Personal accident compensation for owner-driver

Pa cover in bike insurance is available with a sum insured of Rs. 15 lakhs. And in the event of an accident of the insured, the following compensation will be paid to the insured or their loved ones. Here is the compensation for a personal accident policy.

Type of injury Compensation
Loss of eyesight in one eye or one limb 50%
Loss of eyesight in one eye and one limb
Loss of eyesight in both eyes or loss of both limbs

Personal Accident Cover for Paid Driver/Passenger

On opting personal accident insurance policy, the coverage is only applicable to the owner-rider of the bike. People who regularly travel with a pillion rider must opt for PA cover for pillions. Though it is not a part of the policy out of the box, the best accidental insurance policy, like the one offered by HDFC ERGO will let you choose an add-on.

Choosing this add-on will ensure that you need not buy standalone pa cover while having the best accident policy out there. A small premium as an add-on will offer protection to your pillion riders and compensate them in the event of disability or accidents.

Is It Mandatory to Have a Personal Accident Cover?

The initial Motor Vehicle Act of 1988 did not include the requirement of a compulsory personal accident cover for 2 wheeler. Nevertheless, this obligation was subsequently introduced through an amendment, aiming to extend compensation to the families of the deceased and to provide compensation for injuries or disabilities. Another amendment in January 2019 brought about slight modifications to the regulations regarding personal accident policy. Under the following circumstances, one can opt out of obtaining the mandatory personal accident cover.

1. If you are insured with a sum insured of Rs. 15 lakhs or more.

2. If you already have another vehicle, either car or bike and have opted for the mandatory pa cover.

If you do not meet either of these criteria, adding personal accident cover to your comprehensive bike insurance with a sum insured of Rs. 15 lakhs is mandatory.

Do We Need to Buy Personal Accident Cover More Than Once?

No, you are not needed to purchase the personal accident cover in bike insurance multiple times. Before January 2019, personal accident insurance was included in the bike insurance policy. In the past, if an individual owned two bikes and obtained two comprehensive bike insurance policies, they inadvertently acquired the PA cover twice. This additional purchase of PA cover via multiple policies resulted in an overlap of coverage and additional premium as well.

However, this has changed. The accidental insurance policy is now separate from third party bike insurance policy. If you're already covered, you have the option to skip obtaining the policy again.
