Car Safety Goes High-Tech with Hyundai's Iris Recognition System
In India, car theft has always been a big problem despite a lot of efforts from the Indian government and law enforcement agencies. However, this is not the only threat to your vehicle safety. The fact that road accidents in India remain among the highest in the world also creates a lot of challenges. Despite the introduction of heavy fines, people have been found driving in an inebriated state as well as using electronic devices while driving.Which is why, companies like Hyundai have decided to take advantage of new and advanced technologies which use artificial intelligence and sensor fusion for enhanced driver identity authentication and on-road safety.
The company has come up with multiple technologies for using biometric authentication with positive impact on both vehicle safety as well as driver’s quality of life and healthcare. According to Hyundai, as cars become more and more advanced, everything from opening door locks, to engine starting, controlling interior and exterior lighting, controlling vehicle transmission and suspension adjustments as well as its infotainment system will become automated. But all this cannot compromise the consumer’s privacy or safety. One of their latest tech breakthroughs, involving iris recognition, is a great example of that. Also, Hyundai promotes safety through attractive discounts for installing anti-theft features when you approach them to buy a comprehensive Hyundai car insurancepolicy. Now, read on to know more about their iris recognition system.
What is Hyundai Iris Recognition?
While you are probably aware of the unique identity protection that your fingerprint offers, the iris recognition system by Hyundai might seem novel. However, it looks very promising. Hyundai Mobis has come up with a system which includes iris and pupil recognition along with facial recognition. The human eye has many individual features. Different people have different eye colours, many are black, some have blue, and some have green or gold and other colours as well. The iris of the eye controls how much light enters the eye, and as a result, every person has unique patterns and colour combinations on their iris. Considering the extreme variation in the patterns of people’s iris, the chance that more than one person can have similar iris is about one in a million. This considerably reduces an authentication error. Plus, when both the eyes are used, the probability of one in a million reduces to one in a trillion, which makes this an extremely effective protection system. One example of the usage of this technology is by Gentex of USA. Gentex is a leading manufacturer of automobile parts and a leader in industry research. They have come up with a system where an infrared sensor is built into the rear-view mirror of the car which does an iris scan and authentication.
How does the technology work?
Hyundai has been working on a Driver State Recognition technology based on iris recognition. The system keeps a track of where the driver is looking and where their eyes are focused. This system can deliver an alert or a warning through different methods, like ringing a chime in case the driver is found not giving full focus to road and driving. Until now, the system has been able to identify where the driver is looking by processing the direction of their face and analysing if their eyes are open or shut.
With the new system though, it is now possible to even scan the movement of eyelids, check the state of pupils as well as identify the state of the iris of the driver. This will help the system to get a much better understanding of the driving state. Hyundai is in the process of getting patents on the technology and is expected to continue working on its improvement in the future.
As of 2021, Hyundai said that the technology will first be implemented in large commercial vehicles and will make its way to passenger vehicles with the passage of time.
Conclusion
All in all, vehicle and passenger safety continue to be key areas of concern for both car makers and insurance companies. As the systems become more and more complex, they will boost the overall level of safety. Also, thanks to their latest tech strides, Hyundai car insurance will become more and more affordable as the underwriting costs will be lowered with the strengthening of these safety measures. The future of automotive technology is closely tied with the development of smart systems and advanced communication technologies. With improvement in software and hardware, it will become possible for everyone to reach their destinations safely and crimes related to vehicles will also be lowered.
