You must have seen in plenty of Hollywood and Bollywood movies of the protagonist making a grand entrance in a gorgeous car that has no roof over it. These types of cars that come with the feature of a foldable or removable roof are called a convertible car. Also referred to as cabriolets or drop-top cars, they come in different shapes, sizes, and models, but they all have one thing in common – they can make heads turn.
1. The popularity of convertible cars in India
Convertible cars were in vogue in the past and several members of the royal families used to travel in them. They, however, then went out of fashion for a few years, but they saw an amazing resurgence of sorts. The new-age convertibles come with far greater intelligent and efficient technology and equipment. They make for the right combination of style and engineering excellence and have become a favourite ride of millionaires.
Experts also say that because the convertibles have become relatively more affordable, there are more takers for them than decades back. Youngsters are more interested in them as convertible cars stand out because of their unique styling and sporty look. The headroom is never an issue in such cars and when you get the option of driving with the roof that can come up within a minute, driving in bad weather is also not a matter of concern. Car manufacturers are also enticing the younger lot of tech-savvy car owners who are equally passionate about the concept of fun motoring and have an adventurous side to them.
2. Types of Convertible Cars
There are different models based on their seating configuration, rooftop, and engine.
-
The Roadster is a two-seater sports car with a foldable soft roof. These are the ones you usually have seen the couples driving.
-
There are four-seaters with fabric/metal roofs.
-
The Supercar usually has a soft-top and a powerful engine.
-
The Cruiser is meant for not speed enthusiasts, but those who want chilled-out drives.
-
The cars with folding hardtops offer more stability and protection against bad weather. It’s safer in comparison to a soft-top in the event of an accident.
-
The one with fabric sunroof makes the car only partially convertible, but the occupants can still enjoy the open-top experience. The fabric part of the roof folds up in a smaller space with the click of a button. These are comparatively more affordable than a fully convertible car.
Then there are cars that come in the luxury segment because of the luxurious interior. Similarly, there are convertibles designed to give an off-road experience as well. No matter, which type you opt for, you must protect them with insurance. Since the premium of insurance for luxury cars depends on the value of the vehicle, insuring for the convertible cars is slightly expensive. But in case you haven’t taken any claim, you can make the most of No Claim Bonus (NCB) policy.
Conclusion
There is a certain joy in driving a car with its top pulled down. Indians are developing a fondness for convertible cars. If you own a convertible or plan to buy one, it’s important to safeguard it with comprehensive insurance for luxury cars so that in case of an accident, you don’t have to incur any financial losses.
