How to Check Transmission Fluid: A Step-by-Step Guide

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to check transmission fluid:

1. Park on a level surface

Use a levelled and flat surface to park your car to avoid sliding down during the auto jump. This provides precise reading.

2. Locate the transmission dipstick

Start by popping the hood of your car. Locate the transmission dipstick first. Typically, it is a part located at the end of the engine, and it looks like a short object, with usually a grip to hold on to.

3. Warm up the engine

Start your car's engine and leave the engine to run for a few minutes. With this, the transmission fluid is heated such that its temperature is closer to its normal operating temperature.

4. Engage the gears

With the emergency brake on, shift your gear in gear position by position (P, R, N, D, etc) and hold them for a few seconds as well. Thus, it makes the movement of the oil in the gears smooth.

5. Check the fluid level

Pull off the engine and lift the dipstick. Wipe it clean with a piece of cloth that does not have fibres, stick it inside fully, and then redo it. Take a look at the dipstick line to assess the amount of oil level. Generally, markings "Full" and "Add" levels, respectively.

6. Observe the fluid condition

Check the colour and thickness of the fluid. It should be vivid, shining, crimson, and have a silky texture. If the fluid sticks in it and has dark, burnt, and foul odours, it may mean that the machine needs urgent repair.

7. Add fluid if needed

If the “Add mark” is lower than the existing fluid level, you need to top-up with transmission fluid. Make sure you choose the kind of fluid that is recommended for the vehicle model. Run it in gradually, and wait for the fluid to seep right to the bottom before you can ascertain the level again.
