How to Register on the e-Filing Services Portal (Individual Taxpayers)
Here is a detailed guide to registering as an individual taxpayer on the e-filing Services portal –
Step 1: Visit the official website of the e-filing portal https://www.incometax.gov.in
Step 2: Select Register on the top right corner of the homepage.
Step 3: Select Taxpayer, enter your PAN, and click Validate.
Step 4: Provide basic details like name, date of birth, contact details like mobile number, email ID, etc., and click Continue.
Step 5: Two OTPs will be sent — one to your registered mobile number and one to the email ID. Enter both the OTPs to complete the verification process.
Step 6: Set a username and password for your account. The username is usually the PAN by default. Click Register.
Step 7: Upon successful registration, you will receive a confirmation message.
Filing Income Tax Returns Online Using the e-Filing 2.0 Portal
The process to file ITR online using the e-filing 2.0 portal is quite simple –
• Visit https://www.incometax.gov.in and log in to your account.
• Select an e-File option and click on Income Tax Return from the drop-down menu.
• Select the Assessment Year, ITR form, and ITR submission mode. Choose online as the submission mode. ITR-1 (Sahaj) is for salaried individuals with income up to Rs 50 lakh. ITR-2 is for individuals with income from salary, property, and capital gains.
• Click on Start Filing. Enter all the required details in the relevant sections. Some fields will have pre-filled data that you must review and confirm.
• The portal will calculate the tax payable or refund due. Validate the Return details.
• Click on Preview and Submit.

How to Check the Status of e-Filing of Income Tax Online?
The below steps will help to check the status of your e-filing of income tax –
• Go to the official website of Income Tax e-filing: https://www.incometax.gov.in
• Log in with your username and password. The username will be your PAN.
• On the dashboard, under the e-filing section, click on View Filed Returns. You will get the list of all the returns you have filed.
• Select the relevant assessment year and click on submit. The status of the e-filing income tax will be displayed.
• If your ITR has been verified but not yet processed, it will show as Successfully Verified. If it has been successfully processed, it will show as Processed. If your ITR has been filed but not yet verified by you, the status will show as Pending for e-Verification. If there’s any problem with the filing, the status will be Defective Return.
