One of the happiest moments in the life of a family is when they welcome a new member. Especially, for a woman to enter the phase of motherhood is a significant moment. But the journey of childbirth and maternity is not easy. From the time the child is conceived, the woman must get proper nutrition and care. But sadly, maternal healthcare is not significantly prioritised in many parts of the country, where women are still expected to do several household chores and get little medical attention. In an attempt to change the scenario, the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana. Let’s learn more about it.
What is the PM Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) Scheme?
The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana is a maternity benefit programme aimed at improving maternal healthcare. Launched by the Government of India in 2017, the scheme provides a cash incentive of Rs 5,000 to pregnant and lactating women in three instalments. The cash gets transferred directly to the bank or post office account of eligible women pregnant with their first child.
Eligibility Criteria for the Pradhan Mantri Yojana for Pregnancy
The eligibility criteria to be a beneficiary of PMMVY are:
• The woman must be an Indian citizen and fulfil the conditions relating to maternal and child health
• The woman who conceives her first child on or after January 1, 2017
• She should not be employed in any State or Central government or public sector undertakings
• She should not be a part of any other maternity scheme of the government
• If the woman has lost her job due to pregnancy
Features of the PMMVY Scheme
To ensure the mother and child get proper nutrition during and after childbirth, the Government of India launched the PMMVY scheme. Some of the features of the scheme are listed below.
• The primary feature is providing monetary compensation of Rs 5,000 to pregnant and lactating mothers to take care of their health as well as their children. The cash incentive is given in 3 instalments. The first instalment of Rs 1,000 is provided after early registration of pregnancy, 2nd instalment of Rs 2,000 after six months of pregnancy and 3rd and final instalment after registration of childbirth.
• Women in sound health give birth to healthy children. The scheme promotes the importance of a healthy and nutritious diet for pregnant and lactating mothers. It also emphasises maintaining good health with proper weight and avoiding strenuous work during the advanced stages of pregnancy or soon after delivery.
• The scheme encourages women to take adequate food and rest after childbirth and indulge in proper breastfeeding, which is essential for healthy babies.
Benefits Under PMMVY Scheme
• The beneficiary will get a cash incentive of Rs 5,000 for the first child, which will be paid in three instalments. In the 1st instalment, she will get Rs 1,000, and Rs 2,000 each in the 2nd and 3rd instalments.
• The eligible beneficiaries will receive an additional incentive of Rs 1,000 under the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY), provided they have opted for institutional deliveries.
• The monetary compensation will help women meet their dietary needs as they require additional nutrition during pregnancy and after childbirth.
• The scheme will help prevent malnourishment among both mothers and babies.

Will the Beneficiary of the PMMVY Scheme Get Benefits in Case of Stillbirth or Miscarriage?
Yes, the beneficiary will still get the benefits, and this is how it works. The monetary compensation of the scheme, as you know, is paid in three instalments. So, in case of stillbirth, the beneficiary will get the first two instalments, and she can claim the last instalment for future pregnancy. In case of miscarriage, the compensation will be based on the date of miscarriage. If she has claimed only the first instalment, she is eligible for the remaining two instalments for future pregnancy. If the beneficiary has a miscarriage after two instalments, the third one can be claimed later in future.
Conclusion
During pregnancy, it is crucial for women to be in the best of their health to avoid any complications during and after childbirth. However, in rural areas, maternal healthcare is a matter of concern, with the majority of women being undernourished. To address this significant issue, the Government of India launched the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, which offers cash incentives to pregnant and lactating women to take care of their dietary needs. Apart from the PM Yojana for pregnant ladies, women should also have a health insurance policy for financial security during a medical emergency. Healthcare plans come with several benefits and optional add-on covers like critical illness health insurance, maternity insurance, etc., which can be purchased with additional premiums.
