Start Nature Restoration from Home this Environment Day

Published on June 3, 2021. EST READ TIME: 3 minutes

Days after the nationwide lockdown began last year, people woke up to the chirping of birds followed by a pleasantness in the air. While Mother Nature started recuperating from all the pollution and manmade destruction, mankind began to realise the importance of a healthy and sustainable environment. So, it is high time you take the essential steps to become friends with nature, and planting trees is the best starting point for the same.

#GenerationRestoration

This World Environment Day is the time to get back to nature and give back to nature. With this year’s theme being ‘Ecosystem Restoration’, the realisation that the power to restore nature lies largely on us would initiate a culture of revival.

Recently, at a hospital in Nagpur, doctors asked the patients who had recently recovered from Covid-19 to go back and plant at least 10 trees. Those who are on oxygen therapy during Covid-19 need multiple times more oxygen. While we may consider ourselves to be responsible consumers of earthly resources, there are still many hidden ways in which we take the environment for granted. Just like charity, a person’s first responsibility to save trees begins at home.

One step at a time

Little steps can help us reach a larger goal. Hence, each one of us can start a My Tree campaign for ourselves and take the onus to plant and gift trees. Apart from planting trees, making gifting of trees a practice will add to the ethos.

Promoting growing and gifting of trees as a cultural practice where it becomes a part of everyday life can turn the tables. This will help us establish a personal relationship with plants and once that is built, taking care of nature will become a habit.

Kitchen Gardening

The physiological and cultural importance of trees on earth has made it evident that we cannot be careless with our resource. According to a 2015 study in the journal Nature, since humans started cutting down forests, 46 percent of trees have been felled. If that is not a wakeup call, we don’t know what is.

We can start with terrace or kitchen gardens at home as their significance is manifold. It will ensure an inexpensive, regular and handy supply of fresh vegetables, which provide basic and essential nutrition. Green vegetables contain vitamins, minerals and the micronutrients that protect people against many diseases. The habit of kitchen-gardening or terrace-gardening will enhance our affinity towards plants.

Conclusion

Despite the worsening environmental condition in the country and significant challenges, there is room for optimism, with climate management receiving increased policy attention over the past few years. We need to explore possible ways to restore the ecosystem for the future. Apart from that, buying a comprehensive health insurance plan is crucial, so that you can protect yourself against medical emergencies and sky-high bills. By being econ-conscious and planning ahead, we can all live a better life.
