Water is one of the most precious resources for all lives on Earth. Water has immense value in all aspects of human life; from our households and daily use to industries, agriculture, transport, recreation, sanitation, healthcare and above all - our environment. In fact, life on earth was born in the ocean, and whilst we mostly depend on freshwater for our needs, the marine environment is one of the richest in the world.
March 22nd is celebrated as World Water Day in an effort to create awareness about the value of water and the associated challenges, both on an individual as well as global level. Recognising large-scale issues like limited water supply, availability of clean water for all, and valuation of water is just as important as acknowledging how water impacts our health on a personal level. After all, water is life. This is why it is important to consider how water contributes to our health:
1. Protects tissues, spinal Cord, and joints
Water quenches our thirst and keeps the moisture levels in tissues, joints and spinal cord stable. It lubricates sensitive parts of the body such as our eyes, nose, mouth, bones and regulates our body temperature.
2. Aids in digestion and waste removal
Staying hydrated helps our body in the excretion process. Perspiring is crucial in order to cool the body down and regulate body temperature, but it can also dehydrate you. Hence it is important to drink adequate water. It is also an important component in the process of digestion and is necessary for digesting fibre. Drinking enough water will ensure that your kidneys work efficiently in removing waste from the blood and in the process of defecation and urination too.
3. Hydrates the Body
About 60-70% of the human adult body consists of water. Due to various daily exertions, we lose a lot of water content through sweating, excreting and bodily processes. We can also lose a lot of fluids due to great physical stress such as illness, heat strokes or severe dehydration. It is important to restore hydration and incorporate certain minerals and salts in our fluid intake.
4. Keeps Your Brain Running at Optimum Capacity
If you have ever noticed you feel disoriented or your mind starts feeling foggy when you haven’t had water in a while. The brain is responsible for the rest of the body functioning properly and dehydration can take a serious toll on our cognition, memory retention, attention span and overall energy levels. Remember to always keep sipping on water or electrolyte-rich fluids throughout the day.
5. Protects Your Cardiovascular System
Plasma, which takes up more than half of the total blood volume in our body, is approximately 90% water. So dehydration can lead to an imbalance in the minerals in our blood and potentially cause issues in circulation and heart function, like a drop in blood pressure. Thus, hydration plays a critical role in protecting your cardiovascular health by regulating water levels in the blood and ensuring good circulation.
How Much Water Do We Need?
The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recommends 3.7 litres (15.5 cups) of fluids for men and 2.7 litres (11.5 cups) for women per day and this can be in the form of fruits and vegetables, or beverages other than water. You can improve your hydration habits by carrying water bottles with you, keeping track of your daily intake and aiming to hit the recommended intake numbers
Health issues due to low water consumption:
With the chaos of daily life, hydration often takes a backseat. Chronic dehydration has become a very common problem and may lead to several health issues. Fatigue, digestion issues, constipation, irregular blood pressure, unhealthy weight gain, higher levels of bad cholesterol, premature ageing, kidney or urine infections, skin issues like eczema, and respiratory issues are potential health issues that may be caused due to insufficient water intake.
Conclusion:
Water holds so much importance for human life in a multitude of ways and has an undeniable impact on our home, family life, environment, and our own well-being. On World Water Day, we must acknowledge the role water plays in maintaining good health. In fact, considering the unpredictability of modern life, it is also important to lay out safety-nets for our health in the form of health insurance and also preventative measures like a healthy diet, an exercise routine, yoga, meditation and so on. A better understanding of the value of water will contribute to the protection of human health all across the globe.
