How to Keep Yourself Hydrated When Travelling Abroad this Summer?

Stay Hydrated while Travelling

Summers are here and the holidays will be here soon too. Due to COVID, travel plans had all taken a backseat, but things are better and it is time to plan your summer holidays. It can be a personal choice to travel within the country or abroad, but one must ensure you take their travel insurance and take care of their health.

Buying insurance is easy and you can easily buy travel insurance online with a few clicks. Health is something you need to take care of and the most important thing in summers is to keep yourself hydrated. There are other aspects when it comes to staying safe and having a healthy holiday, but in this post, we will focus on tips to stay hydrated

Before we start with tips, let us understand the reasons which can make you dehydrated during your holiday.

Reasons for Dehydration

Following are the main reasons why you can feel dehydrated on a holiday:

1. When you are on a long flight, the humidity level in the air of the cabin is less and this can make you dehydrated

2. Chances of contamination in food and water are high in summers and these can cause diarrhoea which also causes dehydration

3. Heat exposure for long hours can cause a lot of sweating and this makes the body lose electrolytes and fluids. When on a holiday you tend to be out for long hours sightseeing and enjoying the place and this causes sweating and heat exposure which can make anyone feel dehydrated.

4. Binge eating and drinking is common on holidays and after all that is what holidays are for. Bit excessive alcohol and not having water with it can cause dehydration.

Tips to Stay Hydrated on Your Summer Break

Now that we know the common causes of dehydration in summers, let us talk about some simple tips to stay hydrated in the summer season this time when you are on your holiday abroad or even when in the country.

A. Carry an Empty Bottle:

This is the easiest and the best way to keep one hydrated when travelling. Carry a good quality reusable bottle with you from home and keep filling the bottle during the day. When you have a bottle, it is easy to keep sipping on water as you will not need to look for water. When water is handy, you will remember to have water and this will maintain your hydration levels.

B. Consumption of Hydrating Food and Drinks:

Choose drinks and food which help the body stay hydrated. Carrying some on your daily sightseeing trips is always a good idea. There are many vegetables and fruits which have high water content and these are best to snack on when travelling. Fruits like watermelon, berries and oranges and vegetables like bell peppers, lettuce and zucchini are easily available and are yummy to eat too and of course, they will keep the hydration levels up.

One should eat potassium-rich fruits like bananas, pineapples and avocados as they help in keeping the body hydrated for a long time even if you do not have water to drink.

C. Keep a Check on Alcohol Consumption:

There are interesting options for alcohol when on a holiday and this sometimes causes excessive alcohol consumption. Having too much alcohol and not having enough water can cause dehydration very fast. There has to be a balance between water and alcohol to ensure the body stays hydrated. If you are drinking keep having water in between your drinks so that the body stays hydrated.

Travel insurance is there for emergencies but by keeping a check on what you eat and drink, you can avoid falling sick and spoiling your holiday.

D. Avoid Over Exposure:

Spending a lot of time walking in the sun or in hot places or on the beach can also lead to dehydration. The body sweats a lot to maintain the temperature of the body but this loss of fluids can increase the risk of dehydration. If you are out in the sun and feel you are overexposed, keep having cold water and try and sit in the shade to relax and not in the sun. If you can take a break and rest in places of fans and air conditioners, the body will cool down. Sipping water and other drinks is always the best way to stay hydrated on the hot days when travelling in summer.

E. Choose the Right Drinks:

It is always good to keep sipping on cool drinks to keep yourself hydrated but what is important here is the choice of drinks. Sugary drinks and caffeine cause the body to lose water and not gain. To keep yourself hydrated you should avoid drinks with artificial sweeteners as the body needs to work harder to process them and this makes the body lose water.

Instead, drink natural drinks like coconut water. This is because coconut water contains high potassium and electrolytes and this help the body store water and avoid chances of dehydration.

F. Chia Seeds:

Chia seeds are a powerhouse of nutrients and they also help the body stay hydrated for a longer time. They have hydrophilic properties and also give a lot of energy. With the ability to absorb water, they help the body stay hydrated. You can add chia seeds in your water and then have that water and there are fewer chances of you getting dehydrated when travelling this summer. Chia seeds are easy to carry and you can easily carry some from home to use daily.

How Much Water Should You Drink?

Having just a glass or two of water is not enough and if that is the amount of water you are having while travelling, you will get dehydrated for sure. You should keep sipping water every now and then and aim to have 2-3 litres in a day.

It is important to understand when your body is not well hydrated. You should lookout for the following signs as a warning signal and take action.

● Sweaty hands

● Nausea

● Vomiting

● Confusion

● Cramps and muscle aches

● Flushed skin

● Dizziness

● Convulsions

Following sick in a foreign land might not be financial stress due to a travel insurance policy but the inconvenience and changing holiday plans is anyway not a good idea. Thus, taking care of simple things when travelling in the heat, can keep the body hydrated and make it easy for one to enjoy their holiday and have a good time with family and friends. Be careful of what you eat and drink and keep sipping on water throughout the day. Remember, even if one person falls sick, the whole holiday gets spoilt. So, have a good time, take care of each other, drink lots of water and stay hydrated. After all, that skin glow will come from a hydrated body.
