Where to Purchase From?
• There are two major ways to buy a second hand motorcycle, either going to a dealership or buying from a private seller. Buying from a dealership is often the safer of the two options because dealerships are required to maintain a record of past ownership and condition for every one of their offerings. Private Sellers will often offer the same models for slightly cheaper than the Dealerships but then the onus of performing the checks falls on the buyer. We would suggest that private dealings should only be done between trusted parties or by people who have a comprehensive knowledge of the vehicle they are going to purchase, most preferably if both conditions are met.
Inspect Bike Thoroughly
• Even if you are buying from a trusted source, it never hurts to check every function of a vehicle before deciding on what to purchase. These checks include examining breaks, checking the gear switching comfort, driving around the dealership to ensure smooth performance, etc. Also check for oil leakages and rust/corrosion along the bike frame, tell tale signs of poor maintenance.
Other than these checks, you should ask any question about the motorcycle before you make a purchase. These can be questions regarding chains, chassis, fuel tank, etc. The seller is there to placate your concerns, and if they can't do it well, that is a failure on their part.
Proper Documentation
• Make sure that all the legal documents are in order before finalising a purchase. These documents include.
• Service Book - While not required, this demonstrates whether appropriate maintenance has been performed on a regular basis.
• Pollution certificate - The certificate will indicate whether the pollutants created by the bike are within control.
• NOC - It is a prerequisite to obtain a no objection certificate from the RTO where the car is registered. It states that the bike can be handed over to the next owner with no qualms about the previous owner.
• Sales Receipt and RTO forms - To successfully complete the second hand motorcycle sale process, forms 28, 29, and 30 are required.
Bike Insurance
• If the dealership doesn't provide their own guarantee/warranty of some sort, it is advisable to purchase an insurance plan as soon as you can, to gain protection in cases of theft, accident, disasters, etc. We recommend getting HDFC ERGO's comprehensive bike insurance to cover damage to your vehicle in a multitude of situations, including, but not limited to, the aforementioned crises. Damage from riots, terrorism, and transportation via rail, sea, air, etc. are also covered in this plan. Insured Declared value is also not a concern for second-hand motorcycles in our plan as there isn't a significant difference between the actual cost and IDV in bike insurance .
Process of Buying a Second Hand Two Wheeler
Let's go over what we discussed above to outline a proper procedure for buying a second hand motorcycle.
• Buy from a dealership for the least mental stress about concerns like previous ownership and motorcycle condition.
• Perform a thorough check and don't hesitate to ask questions of the salesperson or the manager in charge if the salesperson is unable to provide a satisfactory answer to those questions.
• Make sure the legally required documents are in place before initiating the handover process.
• Get bike insurance as soon as you can to not fall victim to any unfortunate occurrence.
Conclusion
Now that you have purchased the second hand motorcycle while doing your due diligence, all that is left to do is go on that long drive to a scenic destination you have been planning. Make sure you have purchased our Comprehensive Bike Insurance and ride carefree wherever the road takes you while leaving your vehicular concerns to us.
