6 Documents Required While Purchasing a Used Bike!

Though buying a used motorcycle has its own advantages. It requires its own set of mandatory checks. These checks can be in the form of physical checking of the vehicle, primarily its physical condition including engine, shocks, brakes, tires, etc. Another aspect that requires your attention is the paperwork. You will require these documents to transfer the vehicle in your name.

These documents are required as per the legal laws of the country and to ensure that there are no legal complications issues in the future. Some of these documents are required to support registration at the RTO, while some are part of the sales process. So what are these documents? Let us find out.

RC (Registration Certificate) Book:

Commonly known as RC, the registration certificate or the RC book is one of the most vital documents which acts as the proof of the bikes’ registration. This document is needed while transferring the ownership of the vehicle at the RTO. Thus, make sure that you are obtaining the RC from the seller whenever you buy a used motorcycle.

You will also need to thoroughly verify and check the RC book for necessary details such as the seller’s name, chassis number, engine number, and other relevant details. Remember, in case the vehicle was purchased on a loan, the RC will have a bank seal. You will then need to get Form 35 stamped from the bank along with a NOC letter. This will state that the loan amount has been cleared.

Insurance Certificate:

As per the motor vehicles rules of India, it is mandatory for all vehicles to have an insurance certificate. The absence of this certificate would mean that your motorcycle will not be registered by the respective RTO. Make sure that you are obtaining the insurance certificate from the bike seller before finalizing your deal. Once obtained, you can get in touch with an insurance company to transfer the ownership to yourself. You can also opt for online bike insurance. This is a much easier process. PUC Certificate:

The Pollution Under Control Certificate for bike is a critical document that needs to be checked before you purchase a used bike. This document certifies that the pollutants released by your motorcycle are compliant with India's pollution control standards. It is issued when a motorcycle passes an emission test and can be done in any pollution checking centre across the country. The PUC comprises license plate number, serial number of the certificate, date of the test, expiry date of the test, and the test readings.

Sales Receipt:

In case you are buying the motorcycle from a dealer, it is mandatory for you to obtain the sales receipt. The sales receipt acts as the proof of purchase at a private or dealership sale. Ideally, the sales receipt should contain the signature of the buyer and seller. The receipt will also include the list of costs for sales tax, excise tax, and add-on.

Road Tax Certificate:

As part of your purchase of a used motorcycle, it is imperative that you get hold of the road tax certificate from the seller of the vehicle. The road tax is usually paid once or annually to the RTO. This certificate will consist of information related to road tax payment and is required to be submitted to the respective RTO. The road tax certificate also states that no dues are attached to the vehicle.

Transfer Deed:

Last but not the least, ensure that you have procured the transfer deed before purchasing a used motorcycle. The transfer deed represents sales and transfer of ownership of the vehicle from the seller to the buyer. The deed will include the chassis number, engine number, motorcycle’s registration number, names of both the parties along with their respective address, and ID proof. This must be signed by the seller and the buyer along with the revenue stamps.

You also need to ensure that you have two copies of this. One is to be with you, the other is to be with the seller. This is necessary so that you do not face legal issues in the future.
