All about Electric Two-Wheeler Charging in India

Electric TW Charging

Electric vehicles are gradually becoming popular in India considering environmental concerns and rising fuel prices. But there is still a lack of an electrical vehicle ecosystem, that includes charging stations. A network of these charging stations needs to be developed to encourage people to purchase EVs. Many companies are coming forward with EV charging solutions. These companies will be installing charging stations in major cities across India. If you own an electric two-wheeler or plan to buy one in near future, do get it insured with comprehensive two wheeler insurance for coverage against any uncertainty.

The battery is the most expensive and important component of an electric two-wheeler. If it is not maintained properly, it can affect the performance of your EV, and repairing or replacing it will cost you a lot of money.

Hence, to ensure the long life of your EV’s battery follow these tips for charging the battery

1. Fully charge the battery before first use:

It is very important to fully charge the battery of your electric two-wheeler especially if you have purchased a new electric two-wheeler. This is required because full charging of the battery will ensure that current is flowing through every cell of the battery and it conditions the battery for smooth performance. Full charging also enables the calibration process as it let you know how your EV will perform on a fully charged battery. You will also find out the number of hours required to fully charge the battery which is generally 12 hrs.

2. Do not wait for the battery to completely discharge before charging again:

Never let your battery discharge completely. It is ideally required to recharge when it has 30% of power left. If you use your EV daily, you need to charge it regularly to keep the battery cells functional. Regular charging of the battery also improves performance and increases battery life. Experts recommend letting the battery fully discharge after 30-40 complete charges.

3. Do not overcharge the battery:

Do not leave your battery charging for longer periods. It depletes the battery and thus reduces its capacity to 95%, leading to charging again. This causes a series of charging cycles due to little discharge and then topping up again. Lithium-ion batteries degrade due to high voltage if left charging for long. Always plug the charger in a socket with the correct electric output as needed to charge the battery.

4. Avoid charging at extreme temperatures:

The battery of electric two-wheelers is sensitive to extreme temperatures. High temperature can cause the chemical in the battery to release gas resulting in swelling of the battery, whereas low temperatures can crack the battery. This adversely affects the energy storage capacity of the battery. Hence extreme temperatures should be avoided during charging as well as driving. It is also suggested that all EVs should always be parked in shade to avoid overheating of the battery. To ensure the optimum performance of your EV’s battery, always charge it at normal temperature.

5. Do not store an empty battery:

In case you are not going to use your electric two-wheeler for a long time and need to store the battery, keep in mind that you do not store an empty battery. Storing an empty battery will cause its cell to die and jump-starting will become difficult. The battery should be charged at least 60% before storing so that it stays in working condition when you need it. Never leave the battery inside the electric two-wheeler if you are not going to use it for several months.

6. Depth of Discharge Control:

If you do not utilize your electric two-wheeler’s full range, charge its battery to 80% to prolong its life. Many battery packs come with 4 LED light indicators, you charge the battery till the 3rd indicator. This will significantly increase the battery life. So a lower depth of charge will improve your battery cycle.

7. Use a proper battery charger:

Always use a proper charger for your EV’s battery. Use the one provided by the manufacturer and not a locally made charger. Never leave the charger connected to the main supply. Also, take care of your EVs battery and secure your electric two-wheeler with comprehensive bike insurance.

In addition to charging your battery correctly and keeping it well maintained, you also need to take care of the overall maintenance of your electric two-wheeler.

● Keep your EV clean. Ensure that there is no dust accumulated on the engine and chain otherwise it will reduce engine efficiency.

● Do not overload the EV frequently as it will affect the life of tires as well as strain the engine.

● Shut down the EV when not in use like on traffic signals, it will save power and give better performance.

● Maintain the right amount of tire pressure and never ride your electric two-wheeler with low pressure.

● Keep the moving parts well lubricated

● Avoid immediate braking as it affects the mechanical and electrical components of an EV.

Conclusion

With all the above-mentioned charging and maintenance tips, keep your electric two-wheeler in good shape for optimum performance. Read the manufacturer’s manual for charging, battery care, and maintenance instructions. Always use genuine parts in case you need to replace a component. To ensure safety on roads secure your electric two-wheeler with comprehensive two wheeler insurance. You can easily compare, customize, and purchase a policy online.
