How to Create a Herbarium File with Your Child: A Fun and Educational Guide

A herbarium file is an interesting activity that kids can do. This activity requires your kid to get his/her hands and legs dirty, as one has to look for different plants, roots, and flowers in the backyard, neighbourhood park, or garden. However, the mess is worth it because this simple activity lets your kid learn a lot about nature. Apart from knowing how various plants have different structures, your kid can learn about the scientific names of each plant. This blog discusses what you should know about how to make a herbarium file at home.

Materials Needed

• Plants, leaves, and flowers – as many as you need

• Drawing sheets – 10

• Glue/Tape – 1

• Big books – depending on the pages of your file (for pressing over the papers)

• Old newspapers – a few

• Scissors

• Pen/Pencil

Step-by-Step Guide

• Collect the plants, roots, leaves, flowers, seeds, and fruits you need from your neighbourhood.

• Clean the roots and other parts of the plants thoroughly to get rid of dust particles, sand, bugs, etc. Leave them in the open to dry completely.

• Place a plant or a flower that you want to go into your file between two layers of an old newspaper. Using your hands, press the paper gently. Ensure you don’t damage the plant when you do this. Also, all features and parts of the plant should be clear even after you have pressed them. Keep a big book or a heavy object over this paper to let the plant dry completely. Let it be in this position for about 2 weeks.

• Repeat this process for all the plants and flowers you have collected. At the end of 2 weeks, all the plants would have dried very well.

• On a page of a herbarium or drawing sheet, place one dried plant. Use glue or tape to hold the plant and paper together. Repeat this step for all the other plants as well.

• Under each page, write the basic information about the dried plant or flower (like local name, scientific name, unique characteristics, date when you collected it, etc.)

• Using a punching machine, punch holes at the left side of the sheet and tie a thread to make the pages look like a file or a book.

Conclusion

A homemade herbarium file helps you bond beautifully with your child as you both set out to collect different plants in your neighbourhood. Another thing that keeps your family bonded is a health insurance plan , as it keeps you financially unscathed even during a medical emergency.

One of the important components of our overall wellness is also being financially secured.
