The capital city woke up to an unpleasant shock in the early hours of Monday, February 17, 2025, when a 4.0-magnitude earthquake jolted Delhi and its surrounding regions. According to The National Centre for Seismology the tremor occurred at 5:36 AM IST, with its epicenter pinpointed near the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan, at a shallow depth of five kilometers.
With the ground shaking residents across the National Capital Region were abruptly awakened, prompting many to evacuate their homes in panic. Despite the intensity of the shaking, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant structural damage. Apart from this, some individuals reported hearing a loud sound accompanying the tremor, intensifying the early morning scare.
Shortly after the event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, urging citizens to remain calm and vigilant for potential aftershocks. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety protocols during such events. Union Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh also provided assurances, stating that authorities are closely monitoring the situation and that experts from the Ministry of Earth Sciences are conducting continuous assessments.
Delhi's geographical positioning makes it susceptible to seismic activities, as it falls under seismic zone-IV, indicating a high risk of earthquakes. This recent event serves as a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability and underscores the necessity for preparedness and adherence to safety measures during seismic occurrences.
