Maharashtra Government Allows E-Bike Taxi Services to Start in Cities With More Than 1 Lakh Population

The Maharashtra Cabinet on April 1, 2025 has given approval to the transport department to allow electric bike taxi services in cities of the state having population of more than 1 lakh. Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik made the announcement after a weekly cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at the Sahyadri guest house.

The services will benefit the passengers who want to travel in the urban areas for upto 15 km. Under this policy, only electric bike taxis under transport category will be allowed , with an aim to provide people with the option of “last mile connectivity” along with cheap travel.

Only drivers between 20 and 50 years of age will be able to provide bike taxi services. Women passengers will be able to opt for a female driver. The transport minister said the Cabinet has only approved the policy in the meeting, and the revenue model will be announced soon, as reported by The Indian Express. Sarnaik further states that the introduction of electric bike taxis, will generate around 20,000 jobs in urban areas.
