The Maruti Suzuki Jimny was born in 1970, originally as a ‘kei’ class car or microcar, suited for daily city driving and off-roading. 2. Interior

While the Jimny 5 door was born out of a compact class of SUVs, it is a roomy four-seater. The shock-absorbing front seats can be reclined fully to create beds. The 208-litre boot space can be enhanced to 332 litres by folding the rear seats. The flat clamshell bonnet, and the upright A-pillars provide a wide, unobstructed view. The tall-boy design further improves visibility.

The dashboard and instrument cluster form a T, letting you recognise the vehicle’s angle more easily on uneven surfaces. The all-black scratch-resistant interiors are designed to absorb reflections and minimise distractions. The gear lever and transfer case lever both sport a retro design reminiscent of the 1990s. At the centre of the console is the 9-inch infotainment centre that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

3. Performance

The Suzuki Jimny 5 door comes with a peppy 1.5-litre K15B engine delivering 104 bhp and 134 Nm torque. It is underpinned by a rigid ladder frame that is ideal for serious off-roaders. It also features a 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil springs for better traction on slippery surfaces. You can also engage the 4L mode on-the-move for maximum torque and traction. Switch from 2H to 4H mode when moving from a paved path to an unpaved one. Improving traction further is the Brake LSD traction control feature, which automatically brakes the diagonally slipping wheels, redistributing torque to the other wheels to manoeuvre the vehicle out of the sticky situation.

The ample body angles and clearance let drivers easily handle steep slopes and sharp descents. The Hill Hold Control feature prevents the car from rearward rolling when starting on steep slopes. The Hill Descent Control button automatically applies the brakes to maintain a fixed speed while descending a steep slope.

4. Safety

While Maruti cars have previously come under criticism for their inadequate safety standards, the Jimny aims to reverse that reputation with its safety features. The Jimny 5 door comes with a monocular camera and a laser sensor to determine the risk of collision with a forward pedestrian or vehicle. The system alerts the driver with an audio-visual warning and increases braking force depending on the risk of collision. Furthermore, when travelling at 40 kmph or faster, the headlamps automatically switch between high-beam and low-beam depending on the presence of other vehicles.

The Jimny also comes with a weaving alert, lane departure warning, traffic sign recognition, and 6 airbags for a safer driving experience.

5. Variants and Colours

The Maruti Suzuki Jimny comes in four variants – the range-topping Alpha, and the Zeta series. Both of these come with a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission.
